Three Phillips Exeter Academy students — Alex Song, Ray Y. Li, and Kevin C. Sun — shocked the world when they respectively won the gold, silver and bronze medals in the 54th International Mathematical Olympiad in Santa Marta, Colombia.

While the U.S. team placed third overall — Song competed on Team Canada — the trio won the medals for individual performance.

From Wikipedia:

Phillips Exeter Academy (also known as Exeter, Phillips Exeter, or PEA) is an American private college preparatory school for boarding and day students between the 9th and 12th grade. It is a large co-educational school, with over 1,000 students. It was founded in 1781 by John Phillips, a wealthy American merchant and early patron of schools.

Exeter is located in Exeter, New Hampshire, capital of the state during the American Revolutionary War, in the historic New England region, and is one of the oldest secondary schools in the United States.

It is a member of the Ten Schools Admissions Organization, founded by ten leading American private preparatory schools in 1956, as well as the global G20 Schools group.

These questions are obviously biased against people of color, how about problems like:

DeShawn has an AK-47 with an 80-round clip. If he misses 6 out of 10 shots and shoots 13 times at each drive-by shooting, how many drive-by shootings can he attempt before he has to reload?

This is an INTERNATIONAL math competition. Kids in some countries probably have never seen an AK-47 or even know what it is.

The story is wrong. They didn’t take first, second and third. They won medals from a certain level of performance.

The Winning Team of the 2013 Math Olympiad from Philip Exeter Academy.

Should I be called racist for noticing the predominantly Asian faces in this group?

The annual competition is a six question, two day, nine hour proof competition with competitors from over 100 countries on 9 continents.

I'm not a professional mathematician, and geography is not my strong suit either, but when did the planet add two more continents? (and don't even get me started on how Europe and Asia are one contiguous landmass divided by an arbitrary line through the Urals...)

Sounds like nobody from the Duck Dynasty clan is there either.

Anyway, here’s the FINAL 2013 ranking by country:

1 China
2 Korea
3 USA
4 Russia
5 N.Korea
6 Singapore
7 Vietnam
8 Taiwan
9 England
10 Iran

Notice North Korea and Iran on the list.

Next question -— where will these kids apply their talents when they grow up?

“Should I be called racist for noticing the predominantly Asian faces in this group?”

It is not a fluke. Several years ago I had to attend a high school graduation.

The valedictorian was an Asian female.

The next 6 in order of grades were Asian females.

The next was Asian male.

The 9th was a caucasian female.

The 10th was black female.

The great thing about America is names like : Song, Kim, Sun, Dinh, Einstein, Marconi, Tesla, etc. can ALL be Americans.

This kid in the comic strip DOESN’T exercise patience at all. Someone ought to teach him to sit down, READ the problem carefully and DRAW something on a piece of paper and THINK instead of freaking out.

And that’s just the problem with too many of our kids today. Too much TV (e.g. Zombie movies) and entertainment.

I’d bet my bottom dinero that Exeter has a scholarship program for inner-city youth. And, I guess, an inner-city kid who qualifies but whose family can’t go the fare, deserves to be there. I’d hope the scholarship program were racially/ethnically/geographically neutral tho, so a qualified kid from a WV hollow would also be funded.

I have a friend who shot a record Big Horn Ram. The ram was in an area that I wouldn’t consider to be Big Horn country. He explained to me that Big Horn Sheep had really only recently been introduced to that area. He told me that there is something about being introduced into a new environment that produces records. It could be that five generations from now, the children of these people from oriental cultures will still be great at math, but I wouldn’t bet on it. I think we are seeing the explosion of Asian intellect in the new environment of Western freedom.

Lots of surprises on this list:

Better than I would have guessed:

North Korea - 5
Singapore - 6
Vietnam - 7
Mexico - 17

Worse than I would have guessed:

Germany - 27
India - 29
Switzerland - 41
Austria - 48
Sweden - 60
Norway - 72
Denmark - 77

Has the EU adopted something like Common Core?

I don’t think you can use this as a gauge of how good the educational system of the country ON AVERAGE is.

There will always be those who are way above average in ANY COUNTRY regardless of how good or bad the public school system is.

Take the case of the Indian, Srinivasa Ramanujan.

He grew up in a village with little or no formal math training.

Yet, he became an extraordinary mathematician and autodidact who, with almost no formal training in pure mathematics, made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions.

Living in India with no access to the larger mathematical community, which was centred in Europe at the time, Ramanujan developed his own mathematical research in ISOLATION.

As a result, he sometimes REDISCOVERED already known theorems in addition to producing new work.

Ramanujan was said to be a natural genius by the English mathematician and Cambridge professor, G. H. Hardy (who discovered his talent), in the same league as mathematicians such as Euler and Gauss.

I don’t think it’s a matter of IQ, but application. Some countries still have old-school teaching methods that get results, and still have a preponderance of families that expect and demand results. Notice that Germany - the land of Einstein - finished only 27th?

A propensity for scientific inquiry and excellence may be evenly distributed but mathematics, the queen of the sciences, is one that largely requires little equipment or expensive material. Cultures that don’t possess the wherewithal to fund chemistry labs, cyclotrons and observatories of necessity push scientifically gifted kids towards math. It’s cheap.

None of it will matter at all if the kid DOES NOT/WILL NOT apply himself. That’s certain.

If the kid wants to bust his chops and succeed, that’s one thing... if he doesn’t, then it doesn’t matter WHERE he goes to school, what kind of instruction he gets, who the teacher is, or how much it cost.

I meant that Sharpton and friends won’t scream to get inner city minority kids in a place like that because (apart from qualifying) they’d have to work their a^%es off sun up to sun down... and like doing it too. What... WORK???? Really!

The end of his nose is red, his shirt is not tucked in neatly —bulging over to conceal his belt, and his coat is unbuttoned with his right hand not ‘down in front’. Next you’ll want to know why these signs of a serious Chess player are solid identifiers.

My girlfriend is Filipina, and grew up in a village with no electricity and no running water. She was basically raised by her grandparents, who got her a good education at a Catholic girls' school. She speaks and writes better English than most Americans, and spent much of her adult life teaching literature and writing at the college level.

But by her own admission, Filipinos like to live well, and will work hard enough to get a good job, but they are not "driven" and therefore rarely rise to the very top in intellectual or athletic pursuits. Culture matters.

Hey - I won the Einstein medal back in high school. ‘Course, I grew up to help write the Obamacare law too ...

Proof: 2 = 1

Let: a = b
Then: a2 = ab
Then: a2 + a2 = a2 + ab
Then: 2a2 = a2 + ab
Then: 2a2 – 2ab = a2 + ab – 2ab
Then: 2a2 – 2ab = a2 – ab
Then: 2(a2 – ab) = 1(a2 – ab)
Then: 2(a2 – ab) / (a2-ab) = 1(a2 – ab) / (a2-ab)

Therefore: 2 = 1

Thank you very much - I am now off to Stockholm to claim my Nobel Prize ...

I don’t think that problem has a single solution; by my calculations, the answer could be any value between 10/3 and 10.

There ARE inner-city kids who are willing to and do work their buns off, and they have a further battle with Sharpton-type influenced peers who accuse them of ‘acting white,’ and we all know how effective peer pressure can be. So to those kids who have worked hard and who get these scholarships, a double mazel tov.
