The annual competition is a six question, two day, nine hour proof competition with competitors from over 100 countries on 9 continents.

I'm not a professional mathematician, and geography is not my strong suit either, but when did the planet add two more continents? (and don't even get me started on how Europe and Asia are one contiguous landmass divided by an arbitrary line through the Urals...)

Alex Song, Ray Y. Li, and Kevin C. Sun

Sounds like nobody from the Duck Dynasty clan is there either.

RE: All generalizations are false including this one but -— certain races excel in certain endeavors - just the way it is.

Anyway, here’s the FINAL 2013 ranking by country:

1 China
2 Korea
3 USA
4 Russia
5 N.Korea
6 Singapore
7 Vietnam
8 Taiwan
9 England
10 Iran

Notice North Korea and Iran on the list.

Next question -— where will these kids apply their talents when they grow up?

“Should I be called racist for noticing the predominantly Asian faces in this group?”

It is not a fluke. Several years ago I had to attend a high school graduation.

The valedictorian was an Asian female.

The next 6 in order of grades were Asian females.

The next was Asian male.

The 9th was a caucasian female.

The 10th was black female.

RE: Sounds like nobody from the Duck Dynasty clan is there either.

The great thing about America is names like : Song, Kim, Sun, Dinh, Einstein, Marconi, Tesla, etc. can ALL be Americans.

This kid in the comic strip DOESN’T exercise patience at all. Someone ought to teach him to sit down, READ the problem carefully and DRAW something on a piece of paper and THINK instead of freaking out.

And that’s just the problem with too many of our kids today. Too much TV (e.g. Zombie movies) and entertainment.

That’s a trick question. Everybody knows he will dump the whole mag. So he will have to reload for each shooting.

I’d bet my bottom dinero that Exeter has a scholarship program for inner-city youth. And, I guess, an inner-city kid who qualifies but whose family can’t go the fare, deserves to be there. I’d hope the scholarship program were racially/ethnically/geographically neutral tho, so a qualified kid from a WV hollow would also be funded.

I have a friend who shot a record Big Horn Ram. The ram was in an area that I wouldn’t consider to be Big Horn country. He explained to me that Big Horn Sheep had really only recently been introduced to that area. He told me that there is something about being introduced into a new environment that produces records. It could be that five generations from now, the children of these people from oriental cultures will still be great at math, but I wouldn’t bet on it. I think we are seeing the explosion of Asian intellect in the new environment of Western freedom.

Lots of surprises on this list:

Better than I would have guessed:

North Korea - 5
Singapore - 6
Vietnam - 7
Mexico - 17

Worse than I would have guessed:

Germany - 27
India - 29
Switzerland - 41
Austria - 48
Sweden - 60
Norway - 72
Denmark - 77

Has the EU adopted something like Common Core?

I don’t think you can use this as a gauge of how good the educational system of the country ON AVERAGE is.

There will always be those who are way above average in ANY COUNTRY regardless of how good or bad the public school system is.

Take the case of the Indian, Srinivasa Ramanujan.

He grew up in a village with little or no formal math training.

Yet, he became an extraordinary mathematician and autodidact who, with almost no formal training in pure mathematics, made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions.

Living in India with no access to the larger mathematical community, which was centred in Europe at the time, Ramanujan developed his own mathematical research in ISOLATION.

As a result, he sometimes REDISCOVERED already known theorems in addition to producing new work.

Ramanujan was said to be a natural genius by the English mathematician and Cambridge professor, G. H. Hardy (who discovered his talent), in the same league as mathematicians such as Euler and Gauss.

I don’t think it’s a matter of IQ, but application. Some countries still have old-school teaching methods that get results, and still have a preponderance of families that expect and demand results. Notice that Germany - the land of Einstein - finished only 27th?
