Jennette McCurdy: I Was A Teenage Hashtag
Wall Street Journal ^ | August 14, 2013 | Jennette McCurdy

Posted on 08/15/2013 8:48:48 PM PDT by SeminoleCounty

I wanted to act since I was six years old, after seeing “Star Wars,” but my goals were more “wear a sweet costume and pretend to be cool” than “be famous.” So the fact that I was cast in the Nickelodeon sitcom “iCarly” at age 14 and catapulted into tween stardom was both an exciting and unexpected journey. When “iCarly” first started growing in popularity back in 2007, my castmates and I quickly felt the swell in attention. I started getting invited to movie premieres, designers were sending me clothes, old friends were reaching out, and I could no longer go to a public place without getting asked for a picture or an autograph. It was all pretty cool. At the time I didn’t realize I was losing myself, but I was....

You may not know who Jennette McCurdy is...but your kids ad grandkids do. And, that's not a bad thing.

When you hear about all the stupid stuff done by some of these celebrities these days, it is really reassuring to see some like Jennette who are trying not to get caught up in all that. And, this is not a "I am better than you" article...more like "yes I am human" article. Really good read....this young lady is squared away

This was actually an excellently written essay. I’m really surprised and I wish her the best. Very few teen celebs will say something like this.

I have a grandchild so I’ve watched her a lot.

I could only wish for her what I want for my own family-some sanity and serenity, some sobriety and peace.

She has a lot of life ahead of her and as she noted chances are it may not be in the spotlight the way things change so quickly in these times.

They don’t broadcast that graphic kind of material on Nickelodeon where’s she been seen for the last seven years but they do a lot of double entendre humor with sexual and especially excretory themes toned down a bit from what you might see on other channels.

It was not broadcast but she was really naked on the set in front of the whole crew, as a minor.

I would think that they would keep that off the air and off the net.

I don’t read all the celebrity rags-sites etc. to remember that story but its good that I didn’t read it.

The young people under 18 have been sending so many naked pictures of themselves around with their devices that the states changed the laws to exempt them from paying the price an adult would for sending such material around.

I can still only wish people well even the ones that do crazy things. I’ve done some myself frankly.

Yes very well written...which is why I had to post it

Considering the last few months we have seen a lot of young folks on police blotters, or, unable to read cursive...quite reassuring to read something like this

I’m betting Ms Jennette can read “cursive”...

Gotta feeling Ms McCurdy is not going to end up like many of the former teen/tween stars on Nick/Disney

They didn’t “show” it. But everyone on the set saw it. She was 16.

I am sure her parents were so proud.

Child stars use that casting couch too. Its Hollyweird after all.

She is the one I thought she was, played “Sam”. Of all the characters on the show seemed like the most real as a person, even in character on the show.

From the internet:

Hashtag
If you have been on Twitter, you may have seen a "hashtag." To put it simply, a hash tag is simply a way for people to search for tweets that have a common topic and to begin a conversation. For example, if you search on #LOST (or #Lost or #lost, because it's not case-sensitive), you'll get a list of tweets related to the TV show. What you won't get are tweets that say "I lost my wallet yesterday" because "lost" isn't preceded by the hash tag. Hashtags believed to have originated on Twitter but, interestingly enough, it is not a Twitter function. Some believe it began when the broken plane luckily landed in the Hudson River in early 2009, some Twitter user wrote a post and added #flight1549 to it. I have no idea who this person was, but somebody else would have read it and when he posted something about the incident, added #flight1549 to HIS tweet. For something like this, where tweets would have been flying fast and furiously, it wouldn't have taken long for this hash tag to go viral and suddenly thousands of people posting about it would have added it to their tweets as well. Then, if you wanted info on the situation, you could do a search on "#flight1549" and see everything that people had written about it. Take this ashtag for example: #worstjobeverhad. This Hash tag would compel many others to share the worst jobs they've ever had, thus contributing to a fun conversation. It can be used for specific searches or individual twitters that begin them for their followers.

My comment: yaaawwwwnnn....

You must be referring to a scene where she’s in a dressing room/cubicle and fighting over a dress with the person in the next one? This was a doctored clip to make it look like she was actually topless and showed her nipple at one point. If you checked this out more, you would see that she actually had a strapless top on covering her chest completely. The “nipple slip” was a perverted act of photo/video editing to make a juvenile look like she was naked.

As for the article, I thought she did a very good job. My kids loved her show and I’m happy to see that it looks like she is growing up to be a wonderful young lady.

I call it “the number sign,” as in “#1.” I use “lb.” for pound, or that funny L thing if it’s the British currency.

I called it pound for the phone button and for the symbol alone. I’m not sure where/when I learned it, but I use the same terms as you.

I’d never heard of the “pound sign” until I started hearing it on automated phone systems. Maybe it’s European.
