Need Freeper Help on a Letter from Parent to College Bound Child

Posted on 08/17/2013 7:24:10 AM PDT by Abbeville Conservative

A few years ago there was a letter a conservative father wrote for his college bound child warning of the liberal influences they would be inundated with. I've searched high and low for this since my daughter just became a college freshman this weekend. If anyone has a copy or link to this letter it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Here is something you might be interested in — it’s a paperback book:

Letters to a Young Conservative (The Art of Mentoring) Paperback

by Dinesh D’Souza

http://www.amazon.com/Letters-Young-Conservative-The-Mentoring/dp/0465017347

Drawing on his own colorful experiences, both within the conservative world and while skirmishing with the left, D’Souza aims to enlighten and inspire young conservatives and give them weapons for the intellectual battles that they face in high school, college, and everyday life.

Letters to a Young Conservative also illuminates the enduring themes that for D’Souza anchor the conservative position: not “family values” or patriotism, but a philosophy based on natural rights and a belief in universal moral truths. With a light touch, D’Souza shows that conservatism needn’t be stodgy or defensive, even though it is based on preserving the status quo.

To the contrary, when a conservative has to expose basic liberal assumptions to scrutiny, he or she must become a kind of imaginative, fun-loving, forward-looking guerrilla—philosophically conservative but temperamentally radical.Among the topics Dinesh D’Souza covers in Letters to a Young Conservative: Fighting Political CorrectnessAuthentic vs. Bogus MulticulturalismWhy Government Is the ProblemWhen the Rich Get RicherHow Affirmative Action Hurts BlacksThe Feminist MistakeAll the News That FitsHow to Harpoon a LiberalThe Self-Esteem HoaxA Republican Realignment? Why Conservatives Should Be Cheerful

Your daughter should be on guard against those who would ply her with alcohol, drugs, and/or sex — three of the the most degrading and time wasting influence a college kid can face. She won’t feel better in the morning and will find it hard to face the day.

Any child you raise involves a minimum of 18 years of hard work, sweat, tears, tons of love and thousands of dollars.

I would start by carefully screening the lists of colleges my child would be allowed to consider. Tour them with him or her. Look beyond the baubles, gifts, promises and great cafeteria food which might impress your young charge.

These are nice trinkets and some of them are even useful. But none of them are as valuable as asking to sit in on a class or, absent that opportunity, even touring the faculty offices of those who will be teaching your child. It is an arduous task which involves a great investment in time and care during their junior and senior years, or even before.

If your child gets even minimally good grades, you will be inundated with beautiful brochures, catalogs, CDs and other stuff which will be flattering to you and your child. They are nice reading (especially when you are sitting on the throne) and may help you narrow the list of which colleges are worth a follow up call or visit. But they serve the same function as mail order catalogs; they want you to buy something.

Some of the best colleges in the country will send out little or no advertising. You will find them on places like yaf.org or other great websites for conservative youth. Just enter "best colleges for conservatives" or other similar phrasing in their search box.

Another word of advice: avoid government loans if at all possible. Keep them at a minimum, if not.

Finances are very important, but not nearly as important as protecting your most valuable investment: your children.

I'm still paying college debt from my two of my three daughters. By the time my third came, we learned ways to avoid this trap. But I'm most proud of the fact that all three emerged with degrees with their values intact. And all three married conservative men who believe in those same values. It was a LOT of work, but it was worth it.

My advice to a child entering college is:

1) You will most assuredly encounter professors who have no desire to teach you anything of value. They are only there to indoctrinate you with their ideological and political ideals. Avoid them if you can, but if their class (usually some sort of required humanity), take the class and hide your true thoughts. It does not good to argue with an insane liberal because they only bring you down to their level in which there is nothing of value.

2) You are there to learn how to think out and address real problems, not the political kind, but real-world problems. Often mathematics, sciences and real world knowledge are needed. This is the information you need to get, work with, modify and apply to a whole range of conditions. You MUST understand the sometimes vagaries of calculus and what it is good for. When a professor goes through a derivation and ends up with a closed form equation, ask him/her how that can be used in day-to-day life, how it can be adapted, etc. What you need to gain, steal if you must, is an understanding of the usefulness of that droll math they are presenting you.

3) Never join a group that has the word “diversity” in its charter, or that is included in their literature. They will poison your mind and waste your time.

4) Don't borrow money for your education if you can possibly help it. Get a part time job, work at the college cafeteria, library or wherever they have student helpers. It builds character and frees you from the government who will be hounding you for the rest of your life. 5) Study....study hard. Take each test like it will increase your yearly income by $1000.....

Advice to college bound kids
I have two kids that went to college. The first my daughter graduated a few years ago and is working. The second, my boy is on his last year. Most of the work you need to do to stop indoctrination should already be done. If you brought them up right it will be very hard for college to overcome. Just some advice take it or leave it.
1) Keep the lines of communication open. When my daughter told me she had to take women’s study course I would ask her if she hated me yet from her classes.
2) Don’t judge, they will flirt with liberal ideas but don’t come down on them for it, just accept it for what it is. They will outgrow it in the real world.
3) Most of all let them know you love them no matter what. Having home support is important especially during the first few months.
4) Warn them conservative views are not accepted on campus and it could reflect on their grades.
It will be an experience they will remember the rest of their lives and friends they meet could be friends for life.

Amen to that. Consider also colleges which ban alcohol, drugs and premarital sex under penalty of suspension or even expulsion.

There is no good reason that an 18-22 year old cannot wait until they are a couple of years older than legal age to drink. And no good reason they cannot wait until they are married to have sex.

In fact, there are a lot of great reasons why it is wise to save sex for marriage and save alcohol for a very limited number of occasions, including total abstinence.

Great list of advice. But I take some issue with this:

It does not good to argue with an insane liberal because they only bring you down to their level in which there is nothing of value.

If you have the facts on your side and the ability to make a reasonable argument, then go for it. I did this with a liberal professor once and he was a reasonable enough man to know he'd been beaten and still give me a good grade for the ability to articulate the facts.

There were others where I wasn't so lucky, only one of whom gave me a low grade because of it. I appealed the grade and got it improved, because when his colleagues reviewed my test scores and assignments, it was clear that it was straight retaliation.

One never knows unless one tries.

Thanks! Good advice. She is is at a university which would be considered center right and majoring in a non social science degree which should avoid many of the more liberal professors. Unfortunately but fortunately we dealt with the sex and alcohol issues in middle school and it taught her some real life lessons. In high school she completely rejected that scene.

Best advice I would give is to CLEP out of as many b...s... classes as possible.

A student can test out of many requirements for English, History, Psychology, and Sociology. There are 33 tests, just check to see which ones your college accepts. My kid is doing this and now has more room for the Molecular Biology and Applied Statistics classes that will actually be of use in a job hunt upon graduation.

CLEP

A phrase I give the kids at church that they should say out loud before acting on any decision (this is not just for Kids. . .I should use the phrase more myself). . .

“DOES THIS GLORIFY GOD”

I have had adults who had been in my SS Classes and Kids Church say they have never forgotten the phrase.

Hope this one helps you.
