Happy Freeper Dell Owners please comment ( Vanity )

My 4 year old HP Touchsmart ( as well as the internet modem and router ) got knocked out during a lightning storm and apparently the PC requires major surgery . Our insurance company will pay for a new computer and I'm looking at a basic Dell Inspiron 660 desktop with the I3 Pentium , 4 GB and 500 GB . It's all I need . Never owned a Dell before but several of my Japanese friends seem to be pleased with theirs so I'm considering one . Before taking the plunge , I'd like to hear from fellow Freepers about their Dell experiences .

my heard drive filled up very fast.

Last time I looked, external hard drives were cheap. Couple years ago I got a one Tb for $75.

I have a problem.

I have two old Dells and only one boat that needs an anchor.

I only buy Dell. The reason is very simple: As far as I know, they are the only company that offers a multi-year onsite service warranty.

My current laptop Vostro3550, and prior one (Latitude D820) have both had hardware failure issues (most recently, the Vostro keyboard needed to be replaced). The Latitude had to have a motherboard replacement, and two screen replacements over the three years it was my main computer.

I strongly believe that at this point all computers are commodities — they will all experience some kind of hardware issue.

But the Dell onsite service is fantastic. I have always been back up and running after a hardware failure within 24 hours, and I didn’t have to bring or send my laptop anywhere.

I think the onsite service is absolutely the only reason to buy any computer these days, and I am thrilled with Dell’s program.

Hi I have had numerous Dells over the past ten years. All were excellent. I have had very good customer service also. However my latest laptop has an issue with static electricity. If you slide it on your lap or the couch for example, it locks up and needs to be rebooted. It’s common for this model and the forums say Dell is not doing anything about it (as of about a year ago). I learned not to slide it around and otherwise it works great. The issue is with a Latitude E5420.

Mine is like an old hot rod. I don’t even have the cover on it. It helps keep it cool and I blow the dust out of it every day or so.

Get surge protection for your AC and phone line. They make some replace a wall outlet cover. I usually use two in series form the phone jack. I have lost about 4 modem cards and a dozen surge suppressors and two dsl modems.

I have a Dell Inspiron that is about 4 years old it works well..the only issue I have with Dell is the noise factor, my computer(I dont know if its because its old) but boy does the fan make a lot of noise..sounds like an engine running..so whatever you decide to buy, ask them how the fan runs and try to get as much RAM as possible, the more RAM you have the less likely you will have an overheated fan..mine came with 3gb of RAM so that might be the cause of the fan noise but my sister had a Dell too and the same issue so it just might be a Dell thing

My son bought a dell notebook four years ago. He got a 64 bit processor, and an NVidia video driver for his gaming. He outgrew it pretty quickly, and ended up building a gaming desktop. He gave me the dell last Christmas. I put Win8 on it. A few days ago it kept giving me the message that a USB port driver had gone bad. Then it crashed. I have checked the prices for an equivalent dell, and have decided to invest in getting mine fixed. It really was a great computer for the seven months it actually worked.
The one thing my toshiba does that the dell won’t is deactivate the touch pad when the mouse is plugged in. It was very frustrating to have the pointer go flying because I accidentally brushed the pad. And there was no way to disable the touch pad. But that’s my only beef.

The only way I would have a Dell is if someone gave me one. jmho
Their customer service was abysmal and that was it for me.

This here Dell is 7 years old and going strong. I use the computer for work and play, and it is reliable beyond belief. The only part that’s temperamental these days is the CD burner / player. Also, I needed a new monitor about 3 or 4 years ago. When this computer finally goes - - if ever - - I’ll get another Dell.

Dumped my PITA HP machine and replaced it with a basic Dell with Windows 7. Never looked back. Loving Win 7, it’s like they’ve resurrected Windows again.

I read a review of the 660 and the reviewer wrote “ The 660 is similar to prior Dell entry level models I have tested in its quietness ; I have to see the light in the “ ON “ button to know the system is running . “
