Word For The Day, Monday, August 19 , 2013 – contratemps

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

contretemps;noun, plural con·tre·temps [kon-truh-tahnz; French kawntruh-tahn] an inopportune occurrence; an embarrassing mischance: He caused a minor contretemps by knocking over his drink. Origin: 1675–85; < French, equivalent to contre- counter- + temps time (< Latin tempus ); perhaps alteration (by folk etymology) of Middle French contrestant, present participle of contrester to oppose; see contrast

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

The NSA revelations may turn out to be more than just a contretemps in the view of his leftwing loyalists. I saw something from SALON yesterday, saying, What if the President has been lying to us? Pretty much saying he is either a buffoon or a liar.

It’s an ironic campaign contretemps that the week Hillary (Killery) launches her budding presidential campaign with a broadside against Voter ID laws as being designed to suppress black voter participation, the statistics reveal that black voting is higher than ever and is higher (percentage wise) than white voting.

Compared to the treachery of the Obama Regime that gave us Fast and Furious and the Benghazi Massacre, the Iran-Contra affair was little more than a minor contretemps.

America demands Justice for the Fallen of Benghazi!

Genuflectimus non ad principem sed ad Principem Pacis!

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

That's a good one.

By the bye these facts & figures from the website Montanakids.com:

The greatest temperature change in 24 hours occurred in Loma, Montana, on January 15, 1972. The temperature rose exactly 103 degrees, from -54 degrees Fahrenheit to 49 degrees. This is the world record for a 24—hour temperature change.

Wildly varying contretemps, wouldn't you agree?

A+++ xsbaby begins her college career on WEDS. Today one of her friends was picking her up to go down to American U in DC, where one of their classmates moved in this weekend, so they are going to visit him. Joey leaves for college on Weds himself, so it’s a last chance for them to get together before everyone goes their separate ways.

Here I am-my cell phone is toast after 4 years, so I had to call to get another sent-it has become a must have, so I looked at what seemed dozens online and picked one...

Now I have to find a couple maps for my contractor compadre, so we can check out a truly remote location before we even consider a bid for work there-it sounds like the customer is lowballing the location to me...

Obama’s minions insisted that
There was no domestic spying-
Now, instead of a contretemps
It has exposed outright lying

As the list of perpetrators
Reaches even to the higher,
With every name, more gasoline
Is poured on the scandal fire

If this is just to keep us
Safe from the terrorist kind
Thanks, but I’ll pass on that
And watch out for my own behind...

But 98% of them are smart phones and there is a significant portion of the population who do not want a smart phone. I just want a phone. If I want the internet, I’ll use my computer. I don’t want to be forced into paying twice or three times as much for a phone than what I need.

i rarely talk on the phone, don’t really like to! text and email a great deal. i do like having the online capability and i use it constantly. i can check and respond to email no matter where i am or what i am doing, and we quite often, even with navigation in all of our vehicles, end up using the navigation on the phone. i have used the phone to check pronunciation of old testament names in the readings, en route to read at Mass on Sundays.

kitchen is stripped bare. all the cabinets and appliances are out and the ceramic backsplash was chipped off. he has to redo some wallboard and is replacing all of the plumbing stuff below my sink with brand new. He has one of the cabinet doors laid out on the kitchen table, with about 7 or so granite samples for us to decide on. He is very efficient and very neat and clean. though i do think i probably have asbestosis from the dust in there while looking at the samples ; )

it is fun! and he had his supplier cut the samples bigger than you would find at home depot, to have a better idea of what it will look like. xshub came home and i think we have agreed on one. we are going to replace our common light fixture [remember you and i have the same one?] with something wrought-ironish, and i don’t knwow how xshub will feel about it, but i have been looking at some that are tiffany glass, but sort of Mission style. isn’t that kind of straight lines instead of floral etc? i do not know decorating vocab, but i know what i like and i’m pretty decisive. xshub’s feelings get hurt bc he will suggest something and i sound like i’m rejecting it out of hand [bc i kind of am ROR]. Like one of the granites, xshub said, this would be ok if you painted the kitchen a light blue. And i visibly recoiled and said, well we aren’t doing blue in here. Again, it’s all just gut feeling but blue seems like a cool/cold color and a kitchen seems should be a warm color. I am thinking peachy/sandy something like that but with more of a defined color than the slightly yellowed off white i chose the last time.

I have a sky blue kitchen. It looks right with the white cabinets. My neighbor has a dark blue kitchen with maple cabinets. She read that cool colors in the kitchen keep people from overeating. Overeating doesn’t happen in our kitchen anyway, it’s the snacking in the family room that is the problem. I have to replace our light fixture since it has a crack in one of the glass panels done by the floor people two years ago. It’s not that noticeable so I’ve delayed the change until I find something I like. I love the option of the candlelights or the down light for focused work.

yes, our’s has a crack in it too. yes i think blue would look good with white. i think i what i do is fix on what was shown in the original pic with the cabinets i like. that’s why i am set on a dark granite with them. i can’t recall what color the kitchen was in the pic though. the granite we have settled on has reddish stuff in it.
