Posted on 08/26/2013 8:45:43 AM PDT by Olog-hai
The movie The Butler saw its weekend box office receipts plummet by nearly a third, from $24.6 million in its opening week to $17 million last week, after a storm of protest from Republican and veterans groups.
The film depicts a White House butler who served eight presidents, and has come under fire for its portrayal of former President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy as being racially insensitive and for casting Jane Fonda as the first lady.
Supporters of President Reagan and veterans groups especially have criticized the film, with some calling for boycotts.

movie.....beer....drugs.....so many choices
Just another hollyweird homo approving leftist commie movie made by a bunch of homo loving, coming approving, socialist believing pigs. I refuse to go to movies any more. If it does not star John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, etc., I ain’t going!!!
Can’t stomach Jane Fonda, especially as Nancy Reagan. Who played President Reagan...Michael Moore? lol
No one should be surprised by this.
And yes oprah will still win an oscar.
Hollywood has their simplistic, negative, political stereotypes and will always default to them.
I’d see it only if Victoria Jackson was cast as Eleanor Roosevelt.
(Hey, it’s as absurd as Hanoi Jane as Nancy Reagan!)
But she will still probably get an Oscar for it.
Too bad. Could have been an excellent depiction of history. Instead, it’s another hate whitey exercise. Pass.
Storm of protests from Republicans and Veterans?
When did that happen? I must have blinked and missed it.
The Movie has made a big profit. If there are enough sycophant Blacks and guilty Whites to elect Obama TWICE, there are enough to make this Blame Whitey Film a winner.
Anyone thinking that this Film is a bomb is delusional. Wishful thinking does not a failure make.
Newsmax should be ashamed of itself...a 30% drop at the box office in a movie’s second weekend actually isn’t that bad.
Oprahfication is a desvastating problem and danger to this nation and the world in general.
Boycott this movie! Reagan is probably turning over in his grave to think that traitor Jane Fonda is playing the role of Nancy.
I’m not a fan of biased reporting no matter who does it.
The Butler was number one on the week. The ‘plummet’ of 30% on it’s second weekend is actually quite a good hold.
Last heres a link.
The Butler has been number one at box office 9 of the past 10 days.
Someone will construe this as me supporting the movie or endorsing it but what i am doing is condemning poor journalism.
Again. No matter who is responsible for bad reporting, in this case leading slanted reporting, should be called out for it.
They should stop making movies to promote marxist agendas.
My issue is that this movie is supposed to be based on the story of an actual Butler at the White House.
It is a fictionalization of a Butler in the White House. Most of the action scenes never happened, and were wholly made up with little reflection on reality. This will confuse audiences. Nothing in the movie actually happened except that there was a Butler in the White house who served for 34 years. Just like the movie Titanic, where nothing was real except that the ship sunk.
I don’t think Oprah is in to Oscar. Could they rename it Oscarette?
THREE reasons, Fonda,Okrah,LIES.....
“Who played President Reagan?”
Alan Rickman, a fine actor who plays (for those of you w/o children) ‘Severus Snapes’ in the ‘Harry Potter’s series. He is a rather sinister, frightening character, much as I imagine Ronald Reagan was to lefties.
I expect they tried to get Ralph Fiennes—the archvillain ‘Voldemort’ from the same shows—but he declined.
I wouldn’t watch this piece of agitprop if they paid me.
Now THAT I believe.
Would you believe Professor Severus Snape? (i.e. Alan Rickman)
can’t find racism from real republicans, so must role play some racist republicans
I really like Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson in “The Song Of Lunch” based on the poem of the same name (Christopher Reid).
He was good in ‘Sense and Sensibility’ as well.
He may have played a terrorist in one of the ‘Die Hard’ movies too.
Good! Now for them to drop to $0!
they can only buy out so many theaters ... eventually is has to stop.
they did the same thing in the 90s to boost movie sales figures
Right. EVERY movie goes down the second week. Wolverine's second weekend gross was less than half the first week's, but it still made good money. The Avenger's 2nd weekend was just 57% of their first weekend, and they made phenomenal money.
So far they grossed $52M on a film they made for $30M. The film WILL be profitable.
Right there withya! Belive (no stats on hand to prove), that is within normal for non-blockbuster solid movie.
He11, Serenity barely scratched 26M for the whole time it was in theaters, and watching it again is orders of magnitude better than anything o and f have anything to do with....
That’s called the standard week to week drop for non-nerd boy movies (nerd boy movies drop by at least half).
I agree, I heard this morning that The Butler took the number one spot for the second weekend in a row.
Hans in the first Die Hard movie....
Thank all of you for agreeing. I truly get upset when i see whats supposed to be ‘our side’ resorting to the very tactics we justly condemn.
Plummeted my tush.
People who love this tripe also loved The Help
it makes them feel smug about race...and moral superiority...it’s the new Church lady
will we ever run out of black victimhood sagas?
lord...Roots...literally a fairy tale was enough
Harper Lee....I fart in your general direction*
*not really...poor old spinster ...I hear she’s in bad shape..bless her heart...but she sure started all this crap
A film costs three times its "production costs" to break even because of marketing costs.
Yeah that’s right. ‘Hans’?
Ever noticed that if the villain is evil, he has an English accent? But if he’s diabolically evil, he sounds like a Cherman.
I wonder if they had ‘Reagan’ talk like Col. Klink.
Seems rather normal to me.
No maybe about that. He played Hans Gruber, the leader of the terrorists in the first Die Hard.
“Ve begin bomben in fumpf minuten.” (Chortling like Count von Count)
He was the head terrorist in die hard.
About the only movies I watch anymore are on the Turner Classic channel. My favorites are from the thirties, and particularly the earlier thirties. After that, they’re too modern for me. :)
Chalk it up to her brilliant “go pick a fight with a Swiss store clerk” PR campaign...
They wanted mac daddy to play this role, but he was much to busy playing golf and planing vacations.
I think your estimate of marketing costs is high. Even the successful movies do not generally have a total gross more than twice production costs. If your statement was true, Hollywood would have gone bust long ago.
. One rule of thumb is that the film should make its production costs in the first two weeks if it's going to be profitable. Butler has done more than that.
However much you want to believe that it's going to lose money, that won't happen. It's going to end up in the black, particularly after international gross is factored in.
It won't increase Oprah's fortune significantly, but it won't cost her.
“Reporting” like this, is why I disregard everything coming from Newsmax...
I think liberals like Jane Fonda like to play conservatives, because they are racists, but can’t act like that in their real lives, but know they can be as racist as they want if they claim they are “pretending”.
Like the racist college liberals who got off for their racism by claiming they were just seeing how people would react.
Sure—Oprah’s going to win an Oscar. I think “The Butler” will run the Oscar table—you know how much those self-congratulating Hollywood leftists love movies that stick thumbs in the eyes of their enemies. Look at “Reds.”
