Skip to comments.Culture: WaPo columnist: This hulabaloo about Miley Cyrus really shows how racist we all are

"Slut-shaming and racial condescension."
Silly me. To the extent that I thought about it at all, which wasn't much, I thought people were buzzing because someone who was an innocent family-friendly Disney Channel star just a few years ago is now prancing around on stage, simulating sex acts with some dude and wearing almost nothing. But I obviously forgot to check with Washington Post columnist Clinton Yates, who would have set me straight.
It's really about racism. Oh, that and "slut-shaming" because how dare we object to a young woman letting loose with her honest expression or whatever.
He appears to be completely serious:
It seems that we still cant handle what its like for a young woman to be able to perform, as she chooses, without layering in a heavy helping of insults as well. While Cyrus was condemned for grinding on Thicke, very little criticism has been laid on the singer himself for his role in the performance. The nastiest of the comments have implied that Cyrus is somehow diseased because of her preferred dance methods.
Add to this the fact that some people feel she is appropriating a certain amount of black culture without proper license and youve got a cauldron of ignorance and discrimination that even in 2013 is widely regarded as understandable, if not sensible. It is not.
When the white, 20-year-old, former child star and daughter of a country singer goes on stage and does something that the so-called ruling classes deem unseemly, it starts a firestorm. When scores of young women across the globe take the stage to express themselves in exactly the same way at an EDM concert by Diplo, and plaster their exploits all over social networks, no one bats an eye.

Miley Cyrus is a negress! I knew it!
She’s just copying Black entertainers
It was surly in bad taste with children and elderly people in the audience. If she want’s to express herself let her get a job in a strip club..
Do you really want me to link to WAPOO to read the rest of the story ?
Color me amused but certainly not offended. Just because I eat off the Senior Menu at Coco's doesn't have to require me to be a fussbudgeting prude.
I’m not criticizing her. I would be criticizing the Hollywood/Teen Media/Producers/Record company/ruling elite who had the child dancing naked for their entertainment.
The entertainment media/music media has a sordid reputation for sexual abuse of children.
Miley is just ‘acting it out’. You do what you know best, what you have been exposed to during your ‘formative’ years (around 6).
She is welcome to be as trashy as she likes as long as she does not use the TV to bring it into dens of children. These award ceremonies should come with an R rating.
Synthetic White Gurl?
Anyone else read this out of pure morbid fascination, to see how the WaPo guy tied this to racism? I came away convinced he doesn’t know the meaning of the word. Seriously.
This pretty well spells it out I think. The author says that we're racist because we're only outraged when a "white, 20-year-old, former child star" performs that way, yet we don't "bat an eye" when other presumably non-white performers do.
What a load, did anyone see the faces of the spectators in the audience? I especially noted those of black people, and they were all in either disgust or disbelief.
She would fit the old joke about the who** when she returned from her nights work:
Pimp-”How much money did you make tonight”
Who** - “$50.10”
Pimp- Who was the cheap guy who gave you $0.10”
Who** - “They all did, said that was all I was worth”
Im not criticizing her. I would be criticizing the Hollywood...
You might want to switch to the new term: Holierthanthouwood.
Mamas, don’t let your babys grow up to work at Disney.
When Walt Disney died Disney died with him.
Unless one is a supporter of sexualizing young girls at a vulnerable age, this can't be a good role model for little girls.
As to the charge of racism, does this writer want young black girls to continue acting this way? Does he believe that acting out this way is constructive? Or is he complaining about a racism that fears for Cyrus but not for black girls? If it's the latter, then he's not listening to people like O'Reilly, who has been crusading against the black hip-hop culture, and the disintegration of the black family for a long time.
Miley is a creepy azz cracker?
It certainly would come as no surprise.
does something that the so-called ruling classes deem unseemly
Nonsense! The ruling classes love the spectacle of the Fellini-esque warping of society.
Who is Miley Cyphrus?
The pic of Will Smith and his family’s reaction to Miley was precious.
She is really low class. She should just do porno, but not in front of people watching TV.
For as long as there have been “sweet, wholesome” female teen stars whose careers faded, the entertainment media has always advised that the way to resurrect their careers was to slut it up.
Dana Plato, anyone?
They say slut shaming like it is a bad thing.
Dana Plato, anyone?"
Yes, and Lindsey Lohan, too.
Didn't Dana Plato kill herself a few years back after years of drug use?
Is the writer complaining that we don't try to shame black women when they act like sluts on stage?
OK. Point taken.
