Skip to comments.Something REALLY SCARY!!! Russian sleep experiment
Posted on 08/28/2013 2:57:51 PM PDT by djf
Over the years, I have read some pretty scary stuff. I started reading "The Exorcist" one night and didn't put it down until I was done, about 9:30 the next morning.
And this material is EXTREMELY disturbing, so I am going to excerpt only a small part. Go to the site to read the rest, but be warned, if you are the sensitive type, you probably should stop as soon as you get any uneasy feelings!
H. P. Lovecraft? Virginia Wolfe?
Soviet researchers from the late 1940s kept five people awake for fifteen days using an experimental gas structured stimulant. This was in term called The Russian Sleep Experiment They were kept in a sealed environment to carefully observe their oxygen intake so the Nikolayev gas didnt kill them, since it was toxic in large concentrations. This has been before the existence of closed circuit cameras therefore they had only microphones and 5 inch thick glass porthole sized windows into the holding chamber to monitor and keep track of them. The holding chamber was stocked with various publications, cots to sleep on but no bedding, running water and toilet, and adequate dried food to last all five for upwards of a month.
These test subjects were political prisoners deemed as enemies of the soviet state during The second world war.

The First Five Days
Everything was running smoothly with the sleep experiment; the subjects hardly complained having been promised (falsely) that they would be freed if they submitted to the test and did not sleep for experimented days. Their interactions and routines were monitored and it was noted that they continued to discuss increasingly traumatic incidents theyve experienced in their past, and the overall tone in their conversations took on a darker aspect following the 4 day mark....
This sounds like fiction.
I certainly hope it is.
Without some indication of what the “Nikolayev gas” is, I have to treat this as a highly distopian science fiction piece.
Think I’m going to go take a nap...
Not true according to snopes.com....
My friend’s brother had a cousin who’s great uncle was Russian and he told him this story. It’s rock solid.
Freakin’ creepy! But it reminds me of the stories about bath salts, and meth.
My thoughts are that it may be fiction.
What I really think it is that something like it happened, and over the years, Nikolai tells Peter, Peter tells Andrei, and on and on and the story gets incredibly embellished.
Scary no matter where it came from!
And actually, we do know that sleep deprivation will literally drive people crazy.
In total: 5 of the soldiers, following the incident took their own lives after being witness to their comrades deaths.
Don't buy that at all. Maybe one, but not 5.
Extreme Waste Of Time
Fact: Snopes has been demonstrably proven to be wrong a couple times.
Combine that with my opinion that they almost always present material with a progressive/liberal bent, and their credibility is, IMHO, pretty skinny.
They have some kind of agenda BEHIND their published agenda.
If you want to know what really happens to someone deprived of sleep, search for “Fatal Familial Insomnia”. It’s an inherited condition that results in the inability to sleep. These poor people go months without sleep before dying.
Wow, where’s Dr. Conrad Murray when he’s really needed?
There was a Nova or a Nature about that family. The research they did on them was part of what showed the 24 hour cycle of Melatonin/Serotonin feedback loop.
Very interesting. You might be able to find it online somewhere.
FDR’s buddy, Uncle Joe, at work.
Right. So I should just believe anything I read online because Snopes was maybe wrong twice out of, say, 10,000 articles they've posted.
“Communion” was better.
Not as silly.
I never said you should believe everything you read online.
But here ya go, “DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ ONLINE!!!
I trust them on this goofy story....
And we know this is true, how exactly?
If it is, we could use a dose for a few people who shall remain nameless, but whose intials are BHO and MO!! lol
This is so bogus that I’ve even read parody variations of it.
That after 15 days of no sleep they all...turned gay.
Snopes is a hard left propaganda outfit set up Dem operatives .
Just run a search on it.
Complete Leftist front group
If Snopes was that bad at what it does, there’d be a dozen anti-Snopes websites out there. Guess what? There aren’t.
Snopes is a left wing front ...mmmm. You sure your tin foil isn’t wrapped a little to tight?
If it’s on the internet, it must be true! Everyone knows you can’t lie on the internet.
Forgive me for asking, but what’s the leftist agenda in debunking this absurd work of fiction...?
Does anyone really need to check snopes to know this story is fiction?
Not really, but it’s always good to have a back up for an opinion....
I just checked Snopes and they deem that to be an Urban Legend.
