MY 9MM Every Day Carry AMMO [video only]

Outline of the criteria that I use for selecting my carry ammo, and presenting some choices that I considerable viable for carry in my chosen platform. I've had this question so often, it was time to make a video on the topic. I've been shooting 9mm on a regular basis since the late 90's, so my research into this began at that time. Obviously, technology has changed quite a bit. There is a ton of useful information online, but having the ability to run ammo tests in the backyard has certainly helped to confirm (or not) my research over the years.

Not exactly sure what I’m supposed to glean from a thumbnail of an image of a spreadsheet...

I didn’t make the video.

I’m just posting the link.

tnoutdoors9 makes a lot of good ammo review videos on his YouTube channel and I guess people are always asking him which he chooses to carry in his concealed pistol.

TNOuTdoors9 has been posting very valuable information on bullets and firearms fro a number of years. He does the chrony work and the ballistics gel testing, then shares it in video format for anyone smart enough to watch his work. He also has a great sense of humor and will include the occasional visit to his compound by Sasquatch. Once in a while hickok45 will mosey into the video. It doesn't get any better than that, FRiend.

I just knew you had to be a Freeper! If you’re back East, around Kingsport the first Friday of each month, we have a chapter which meets for lunch and gab, 11:30 Perkins, the Hwy 36 exit off of I 81. We usually sit in the back at a round table.

Cop told me that the Hornady Zombie Max .223/5.56 was very good stuff, essentially the same as what they use. I understand that collateral damage figures into the equation. Also he said the DRT frangible was pretty lethal stuff.

I didn’t see any of the Herter’s 154 grain SP 7.62x39 in the quick skim of the link. Not seen any tests on it but looks like a fairly effective round. And it’s very reasonably priced, i.e. cheap & Cabelas usually has plenty. I can’t tell a bit of difference in recoil compared to 124 grain FMJ.

I will have to check those out. I’ve been searching for the best 5.56 mm projectile available from a self defense perspective for several days now. Lots of options. lots of opinions. lots of barrel twist rates. etc. One person will swear by a projectile and the next person will curse it. I’m liking varmint grenades too but, like everything else, opinions vary. I have personally seen them shoot what was basically hole for hole at 100 yards however.

The 154 grain SP 7.62x39 is considered suitable for white tail deer, so I would assume it has some value as an anti personnel round.

One thing I see left out of discussions of “self defense” rounds is just how are we defining “self defense”?

Handguns are usually discussed as personal carry & without the notion that one would have 10 or 20 boxes of the expensive defense ammo.

But is your AR or AK for a couple of homicidal “teens” breaking into your home, or is it for serious, widespread breakdowns in law and order? If it is the latter, I think we are getting a little too anal as to minute ballistic differences when the real criteria should be that it is decent anti personnel while cheap enough for you to have a *good* supply of the stuff on hand and be reasonably competent and accurate with the carbine. SHTF, I don’t want a few boxes of expensive US made AK ammo. I want a much more of the reliable 154 SP that I can hit hard and heavy with...a lot, without running out. Quantity has a place in the larger scale disaster scenario.

barrier/ballistic testing with 9mm loads.

I have both gold dot and critical duty loads. Both are pretty good depending on the situation.

I use DRT Frangible bullets loaded into my .357SIG.

I unfortunately had to put an elk down that I hit with my truck, and it was the only ammo I had with me, the level of damage was upsetting to the stomach, but impressive, if one of 0bamas sons attacked me, that would be what I want in my chamber.

Federal Hydra-Shoks in my Beretta 92FS

I was advised to use what local LEO uses so some overzealous, anti-gun DA can’t try to accuse me of using “cop killer” bullets, even if I’m using them against a criminal in defense of my life.

I use what I need and what proven most effective. The pistol I carry is a Sig 239, but I rarely carry, small town West Texas theres not much to worry about here. The pistol that rides in my console is an old T series Browning Hi-Power that was my last duty pistol. My days are spent on the ranch and rattlers, coyotes and feral hogs are the only thugs I have to deal with. I’ve probably taken close to 35 hogs of various sizes, over a dozen yotes and more rattlers than I can count. I use nothing but FMJ’s in both, I like the penetration and I’m a firm believer in leaving them bleeding out both sides. For home protection I have a Jack Russel and a Ithaca model 37 riot model loaded with 00 buck.
