Four Historians Take On 'The Butler's' Racist Depiction of Reagan

Four Ronald Reagan historians have slammed the portrayal of former President Reagan in the movie "The Butler," saying that the 40th president's "attitudes toward race" as shown in the movie are inaccurate.

They begin the article, "What 'The Butler' gets wrong about Ronald Reagan and race," published in The Washington Post, by recounting instances in Reagan's life when he decried racism and took a stand for the African-American community.

While serving as president of the Screen Actors Guild, for example, "Ronald Reagan called upon the entertainment industry to provide greater employment for black actors." That position was controversial at the time.

When giving his infamous "evil empire" speech in March 1983 against the Soviet Union, Reagan also attacked the "the resurgence of some hate groups preaching bigotry and prejudice" in America.

These examples came after the historians recount the time when young Reagan brought two African American football teammates home from college to spend the night with his family.

That is hardly the "sense" of Reagan that one gets from the Lee Daniels film the historians explain.

The four historians, who have more than a dozen Reagan biographies between them, are Stephen F. Hayward, whose books include "The Age of Reagan"; Paul Kengor, author of 2007's "The Crusader"; Craig Shirley, who wrote last year's "Rendezvous With Destiny" and the 2005 book "Reagan's Revolution"; and Kiron K. Skinner who has compiled several books on Reagan's life including "Reagan's Path to Victory."

They say they are concerned "by the movie's portrayal of Reagan's attitudes toward race."

"We are especially concerned because many Americans readily accept Hollywood depictions of history as factual," they add.

"The Butler" is loosely based on the life of Eugene Allen, an African American who worked as a butler in the White House under eight presidents

What do you expect from a movie that stars a traitor who should have been executed 40 years ago?

How much money did this 3rd rate movie make so far in ticket sales and figurines? The movie could have been a homerun if it didn’t have so many blatant errors. Odd that all the butlers in the White House were black. Not a single cracker, white Hispanic or hoe. Oh well, three cheers for Hollyweird.

How do you like this line: "When giving his infamous "evil empire" speech.." Infamous? Is telling the truth considered "infamous" nowadays? in·fa·mous ˈinfəməs adjective 1. well known for some bad quality or deed.

“The Butler” is loosely based on the life of Eugene Allen, So loosely that the evil traitorous spawn of Henry Fonda plays Nancy Reagan.
But this is how any Republican and especially a conservative Republican are portrayed in Hollywood. within 20 years or so most people in this nation will believe that Woodrow Wilson was a great humanitarian and Ronald Reagan was a Hitler wannabe.

Bad mouth the movie all you want, but come 2014, it will rake in the academy awards. No political agenda involved. s/

Its being advertised on the radio, gee, I wonder why? There haven’t been any adds so far on the new Riddick movie that’s coming out, not that it needs one.

I’ve read Kengor’s “The Crudader.” It’s an excellent account of how Reagan brought down the USSR. As for this butler movie, I am absolutely certain I will never watch it. Maybe it’s the sadness of knowing the commies are still alive and well in Hollyweird.

Top 5 Inaccuracies in 'The Butler'

4.The Butler disliked President Reagan: The real Eugene Allen has expressed affection for all the presidents he served, noting he voted for each when they were inhabiting the White House. A framed picture of the Reagans was displayed on Allen's living room wall, and he noted that Nancy Reagan gave him a warm hug when he finally retired. Hardly sounds like the character in the movie, played by Forest Whitaker, who appeared to be fed up with the Reagans and quit for that very reason.

Just having Hanoi Jane play Nancy Reagan was all I needed to know about this farce. Another fairytale passed off as history from the left.

These examples came after the historians recount the time when young Reagan brought two African American football teammates home from college to spend the night with his family.

I guess that was the early 1930s, Reagan remained friends with one of them for years. The two black men were W. Franklin Burghardt and Jim Rattan.

This is from a 2008 Washington Post article, it seems to prove that Reagan was a favorite of the Butler.

"They’ve got pictures of President and Mrs. Reagan in the living room. On a wall in the basement, they’ve got pictures of every president Gene ever served."

You must not be watching the Discovery Channel. "Riddick" ads are on at least two times an hour.
