The parents of a south Georgia teen found dead inside a rolled-up wrestling mat in a high school gym want federal authorities to reopen a case that had been declared an accident, the family's attorney said Wednesday.

There is video showing the kid going in the gym by himself, kids supposedly kept stuff on top of vertical rolls of gym mats, he supposedly fell in. Parents etc had him exhumed and did another autopsy. Say he was murdered.

Sheriff Chris Prine in Lowndes County has previously said he suspected Johnson became trapped while trying to retrieve a shoe that fell into the center of the large rolled mat.

The presence of a shoe at the bottom of the rolled up mat...presumably out of the victims reach...would bear this out. The article does not specify.

The mats were rolled already, standing up vertically, apparently behind the bleachers, IIRC. Video shows him walking in alone. Kids supposedly would keep stuff on top of the ends of the rolled mats, as they do not have lockers. He apparently climbed on top and fell in, and became trapped.

Sheriff's investigators had decided after months of investigation that 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson died in a freak accident after he was found stuck upside down Jan. 11 in the rolled-up mat, which was propped upright behind bleachers at his Valdosta high school.

Oh sure, that sounds exactly like a freak accident.

He rolled himself in the mat and then fell landing upside down behind the bleachers.

The mats were already rolled up and students would put their shoes, etc., on top of the rolls.

His shoe fell in the roll and he tried to get it. I think the bruise on his neck happened due to his jerking his neck to try to make something happen so he could get out. Kind of an automatic reaction to try to move his head. Terrible accident.
