New computer w/ video watching problem need help

Posted on 09/06/2013 6:47:08 AM PDT by sushiman

New Dell desktop arrived the other day ( Windows 7 ) and it has been working primo but today I discovered that I cannot view videos on Facebook like I used to - all I get is a white screen with the audio when I click on arrow . If I click on the direct link to Youtube I am taken to Youtube and it works . Problem is not only FB , though . This is a link from FR and I can't view it either .

Downloaded latest edition of Flash Player but didn't make any difference .

Anybody have any idea what the problem might be ? Thanks in advance from a computer dummy .

You may need the Flash Player plug-in for your specific browser. It is not the same as ordinary Flash Player.

You said this is a new Dell desktop.

What does Dell have to say about your problem?

Download and install ffmpeg. It’s free.

I would first install an older version of adobe flashplayer and see if that helps. I’ve had it fix problems in the past.

If that doesn’t help, I would upgrade the browser or switch to a different browser.

I’m in Japan . It’s late here and my wife , who would have to call , is in bed . Thought it might be something simple so asked here on FR first .

It came with a slightly older version of Adobe and that’s why I upgraded . The browser and the player are exactly the same as the ones in my HP that bit the dust during a lightning storm a few weeks ago .

You upgraded adobe, but didn’t upgrade the browser, and now it won’t play flash. What does that tell you? You either downgrade adobe back to a stable version for your browser or upgrade everything and hope for the best. Using system restore may be your friend.

Install Chrome. It updates Flash player automatically.

What browser are you using?

If it is Firefox, look at the add-on [Tools >> Add-ons] [Ctrl+Shift+A]

Select Plugins from the list on the left.

Make sure Shockwave Flash is enabled.

Make sure Silverlight Plug-In is enabled.

Either/both may need to be updated through Firefox.

==

Firefox has had some serious conflicts with Adobe Flash since around FF version 12.

Later Firefox versions have also had problems with PDF files — PDF is an Adobe Acrobat format.

I have a Dell laptop (Win7) with IE 10.

I looked at the ‘manage add-ons’ for Adobe Flash. The version I have installed is 11.2.202.228. It is an older version of Adobe Flash — but it works.

You might try an older version:

Before you install, you might run the Abode Flash uninstaller to make sure no files from preious installs are interferring with the new install.

This page may help you find solutions:

Thanks . Right out of the box I had this relatively minor problem ( I can view videos on Youtube ) and somebody advised me to get the latest version of Adobe Flash , which I did , but that didn’t help . Anyway , I’ll do some research via the link to Adobe help and see what I can find out .

Wel , ended up calling Dell support ( China ) today . Wouldn’t alk to me as support person said she didn’t speak English well , so wife explained . Took a little while , but what we ended up doing was uninstalling IE10 and installing IE8 . All is fine now . But why does your system work fine I wonder ...?

Glad it is working now.

Before I replaced the hard drive in my laptop, I had quit updating most of the ‘big name’ programs. Every upgrade seemed to create more conflicts than it fixed.

After I installed the new hard drive and used the 3-disk DVD Dell Restore (disks I created when I first ran the Dell laptop when new — they do work and they do come in handy), I took a break. Later, I noticed the hard drive was spinning and spinning. I hoped it was not a ‘feature’ of the new drive to run all the time. Instead, for some reason, the system upgraded itself with Win7 upgrades automatically.

That was how I got IE10.

I had tried IE10 on the old hard drive. IE10 would not run, so I reverted back to IE8 on the old drive. That was a few days before I decided my hard drive was the problem and I bought a new drive.

Just be sure you turn on the system restore feature. Also, be sure to burned Dell Restore disks, etc.

I also did imaging with the latest version of Macrium Reflect (free for home use). The previous version would not fully create the image files and would stall out. The latest version worked on both my Dell laptop and Gateway desktop.

Check it out: http://www.macrium.com/pages/downloads.aspx

[I noticed MR has a newer version. I am sticking with the last latest version, as it works. LOL]

every single time I get a computer or even install a new OS I have to adjust something about the browser or whatever to get it to play videos full screen.

Not hard or anything, and always just once. Just wish it could come with that activated already
