A Rhode Island man has filed a federal lawsuit against Pope Francis and others, claiming the frequent bell-ringing of the Catholic church across the street has disrupted his life so much, it helped precipitate the demise of his marriage. John Devaney, 64, of Narragansett, R.I., lives directly across from the picturesque St. Thomas More Catholic Church. “The bells have been going off 700 times a week, very loud volume, and it’s been going on for too long,” he told the Providence Journal in a videotaped interview. “I’m not getting any response back from the people that control the bell-ringing.” “First of all, the bells are amplified and they’re broadcast on loudspeakers,” Devaney explained. “We live in a historic neighborhood. I think we should get back to removing the amplifiers and the loudspeakers. And then I think they should bring the bells back to a reasonable number and a reasonable time.........

I imagine the church and its bells were there first.

So these bells go off 4 times an hour for 24 hours 7 days a week?

Maybe it's a clock tower and chimes for each quarter-hour.

Including the pope in the lawsuit reveals that he doesn’t know much about the structure of the Catholic Church. The pope does not regulate the operation of church bells at local parishes! If the man has a beef, he should sue the local archdiocese or - if the church is run by a religious order - he would sue the regional jurisdiction of that order.

Those tower bells generally just go off between 7am and 10pm tops.

Go where the money is when you hire a trial lawyer to sue “the establishment”.

“700 times a week?”

There’s only 168 hours in a week. Methinks he got his math wrong.

Well, the seven demons running around in his head add up to a lot of complaints...

I have nothing against church bells, but if it’s true they are amplified and going off 24/7, the old coot might have a point. I think ringing the bell on the hour between 7 am and 9 pm should be plenty, or even just when a service is about to be held. And it also depends on how loud they are and what city ordinances allow. I myself have complained to city officials (with no response, of course) concerning the noise caused by overnight deliveries to a grocery store adjacent to my residential neighborhood - banging metal doors, the flatulence of air brakes, the roar of diesel engines, the thump of pallets being dropped, etc.

You’ll be shocked, SHOCKED!, to learn that he isn’t represented by a lawyer. He filed this all by himself.

His problem is that a “hired liar” would have read Federal Rule 11, while he obviously hasn’t.

“I’m not getting any response back from the people that control the bell-ringing.”

Of course not...they can't hear you. Call them when the bells aren't ringing.

Apart from chiming the hours, the bells ring the Angelus and they announce that Mass has or will soon begin, so once every hour defeats the purpose.

Maybe it's a clock tower and chimes for each quarter-hour.

Even clock towers don't ring their bells twenty four hours a day. (Also, most of them only ring on the hour, not every quarter-hour.)
