ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) Two researchers and their pilot remained stranded on a remote Alaska volcano Friday, two days after freezing rain left thick ice on their helicopter.
Alaska State Troopers said bad weather was preventing rescuers from reaching the helicopter on Mount Mageik (ma-GEEK'), about 280 miles southwest of Anchorage at Katmai National Park and Preserve. Unsuccessful attempts have been made by helicopter company and Rescue Coordination Center, which was called in Thursday and has sent out a Blackhawk helicopter and a C-130 plane.
Everyone on board the Egli Air Haul helicopter was reported in good condition. They are well-equipped with survival gear and food, said Katmai chief ranger Neal Labrie, who has been in radio communication with them.

“Two researchers”?! Global warming perhaps?
Still ... a scary situation
They were installing a camera to monitor cloud cover over the valley.
Couldn’t chip off the ice and fly away?
First time visitor heading to Alaska next week - guess I’ll need a heavy coat and gloves.
What a time to forget the ®Rain-X.
I’d say wait for the next eruption but that may be a while since there have been no known eruptions in the historical record. May need to wait for summer ... oh wait, this is summer!
Yeah, WTH? Ice in Alaska in September? Better light up the sky with the algore signal. I’m sure one blast from his fetid pie hole will be able to melt that ice away. Or maybe just a fly over in one of the G5’s he uses to flit around the globe will be enough to melt it. (Of course he’ll be some carbon credit guilt shares so he feels better about himself. By the way, could he fit is fat ass in a prius?)
There was a sign in the Fairbanks airport when I went last year
Welcome to Alaska step off the plane and into the food chain...
That was pretty good.
Working on moving up there from Texas...My sister lives in Fairbanks and loves it.
I think I am going to open a breakfast taco drive thru.. It would make a killing.
The volcano according to Wikipedia has no confirmed historic eruptions, that I guess is the good news here.
Sounds like a cool idea.
they don’t have breakfast tacos restaraunts up there so I am thinking what the heck?
Hot food may be appreciated with cold weather.
That’s how marketing works. Find a hole and fill it.
Then sink or swim.
Egli Air. based here in King Salmon. Know the owner/pilot.
Hope they are okay.
“How do you solve the icing problem?”
Skate the puck out of your zone.
No! Not the hockey jokes.... anything but those!
It might work in Alaska, but I saw it fail in Minneapolis in the late 1980s, and it was a very high quality, small Mexican chain from Texas with the fresh ingredients and that in Texas also had the 99 cent Margarita.
In Minneapolis they finally dropped the breakfast, but they were still surviving on the rest of the day when I left. I did see Russell Means having breakfast there though.
I really wanna make a go of it.
My sister seems to think it will do well in Fairbanks... lots of transplanted Texans there she says.
I am tired of the same ol same ol here and feel the change in my bones.
I think Fairbanks is probably more diverse and daring than Minneapolis was.
Minnesota was incredibly bland and routine oriented, farmer like.
One of those contingencies I wouldn’t have even thought to plan for. I hope all goes well for them.
