It's what lies beneath that would pique your interest.

During the Cold War, there was a time when some paranoid (or maybe just careful) Americans decided to construct underground nuclear bunkers.

In a scene reminiscent of the 1999 film 'Blast from the Past' where a family lives in a fallout shelter for 35 years, a family home has just come on the market for $1.7 million dollars.

The only difference with this home is that it has a 15,200 sq ft basement underground.

The house was built in 1978 to withstand a nuclear blast by wealthy businessman, Girard 'Jerry' B. Henderson.

Hidden from view: The subterranean Las Vegas home at 3970 Spencer St. near Flamingo Road boasts a 15,200-square-foot basement beneath a two story home above ground.

Home within a home: The two-bedroom, three-bathroom house is buried 26 feet underground, underneath a typical suburban two-story house in Las Vegas.

What lies beneath: It was built in the 1970s to give people a place to safely retreat if the Soviets wiped out humanity with a nuclear missile strike.

Me, too. It’s pretty much walking distance from the Atomic Testing Museum. Too bad it’s not part of their tour. BTW- Living Social currently has a discount for the Atomic Testing Museum. I really enjoyed it when I took advantage of the cheap(er) tickets. Full price is out of budget. I highly recommend the museum and wish I’d had more time to spend there.

Depends how you look at it. When the USSR collapsed, they lost control of some of their nukes and some disappeared, and while everyone was talking about the peace dividend, the threat was still there. Nukes just waiting for some faction or the other to push the button.

There was chaos, and a danger that radical hardliners could have seized power and the uncertainty of the whole situation was not on the side of safety.

We helped them, and now they are ready to challenge us again. All those commies didn't just jump into a grave or hide in a cave after all, and they sure did all they could to retain as much power and wealth as they could.

Now with A/Q scheming to get nukes and set them off inside the USA, the threat still exists for many people. It's a crime that the Government has totally ignored preparations for civilians to survive the approximately 2 weeks of radiation after a blast far enough away to survive the blast, but die of radiation poisoning. You can't hardly even find the do it yourself info on the Government Website, but they have their government bunkers don't they?

Of course, the libs are so against overpopulation, I guess they figure that settles the problem. If they are so against over population, how come they want all those illegal aliens to come into the country? Never mind-we all know the reason for their hypocrisy.

Yep, the risk is always there. I’m just thinking about how ‘78 was in the later, colder part of the Cold War rather than the hot part like in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Were school kids doing nuclear disaster drills as late as ‘78?

I wonder how many other wild and crazy nuclear bunkers are out there that we’re not aware of. I’ll bet some of them are really swinging.

We never did those nuclear drills. We had tornado drills, and the procedure was basically the same. Course we all knew what the symbols for the nuclear shelter were, and heard stuff on the news, but not a lot in school.

My eighth grade history teacher made some extra money as a civil defense instructor in the evenings. He did a 2 day lesson on civil defense protocol, and how to eat food safely after radiation. Demonstrated the geiger counter use etc. It was one of the niftiest lessons he did.

The thing about nukes, hydrogen ones that is, is that they don't have an indefinite shelf life. They aren't Twinkies that will last forever. The hydrogen has to be upgraded and maintained and then replenished on a regular basis. It isn't as if some swarthy bunch of Middle Easteners or a half-drunken fat Russian is hiding one in the desert somewhere or in a shed somewhere in Kolyma.
