United States Takes Spot as World's 17th Happiest Country

United States residents have an extra reason to smile according to a recent report released by Columbia University's Earth Institute. According to their findings, northern Europe received the highest satisfaction and happiness ranking in life, while Egypt and a few others hit the lowest since the Eurozone crisis via background information from the 2013 World Happiness Report released Monday.

When looking at a survey of over 156 countries, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Sweden were ranked as the happiest places, and regions in Sub-Saharan Africa were noted as being the least likely places for overall life satisfaction, according to the report. The United States ranked in at number 17 in the survey in terms of overall happiness and life satisfaction.

Unfortunately, it still didn't score quite as high as you might expect, especially when considering other places. For instance, Canada comes in before the United States at no. 6, Australia, no. 10 and so forth.

This survey looked at information between 2010 and 2012, following the first rankings from the Earth Institute that was released just last year.

While researchers note that many areas are continuing to see improvements and progress regarding ways of life, social and economic upheaval in some areas has caused disarray and problems that have prevented such changes. For instance, the report shows that Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy all drastically fell due to the Eurozone crisis. Areas including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Myanmar also felt the political turmoil of recent issues.

The report notes, in fact, that of all places, Egypt suffered the greatest fall in terms of happiness.

Depends on where you are in the US since it is really 50 countries. I’m gobs happier in my small farm in Kentucky than I was in my home in the Seattle area.

YMMV.

Is the world becoming a happier place? Contentment has nudged up around the globe, UN report says

FROM THE STUDY, HERE ARE SOME OUT OF WHACK OBSERVATIONS:

Mexicans are happier than Americans. Venezuelans are happier than British. Angolans and Zimbabweans, though comparatively miserable, are getting happier by the day, but Jamaicans and Spaniards are ever more unhappy. Italians are less happy than Irish, who are less happy than Israelis, who are less happy than Icelanders, but all of them are happier than Iraqis, who in turn are happier than Iranians. Togo, in West Africa, is the least happy place in the world, while Scandinavia is the happiest, at least if you believe the results of a Canadian-led effort at the United Nations to monitor global well-being.

Don’t laugh, Venezuelans, with their hyper-inflation and their toilet paper shortages are happier than the Brits and the French.

Go Figure...

I had just returned from #2 happiest Norway when Reagan was shot. I went to the Norwegian Consular Office to see what it would take to move to Norway and become a citizen of a country where leaders would never be shot. An overwhelming bunch of requirements. So I’m still here.

Since then, Norway has produced shoot-em-up lunatics too; 92 young people were killed by a maniac in 2011.

This didn’t impact their happiness?

I’ve been to both Senegal and Togo. In Togo your clothes will be stolen along with your wallet. Very polite people thought. As bad as west Africa is, it has nothing on Kingston (Jamaica) and Haiti.

The countries that have the fewest international responsibilities are the happiest. Who cares what Denmark thinks?

But that’s ok, because we’ll soon be a Denmark-type non-power, thanks to Obama.

Well, I’m not sure how this piece of news is going to affect Scandinavia ( and the Swedes in particular ):

http://frontpagemag.com/2013/bruce-bawer/the-coming-flood-of-syrian-refugees-to-sweden/

The Coming Flood of Syrian Refugees to Sweden

EXCERPT:

Sweden has taken in about 15,000 Syrian refugees since 2012, more than any other EU member state. About half of the Syrians who have sought asylum in Sweden so far this year have been granted permanent residency; the other half have been allowed to stay for three years, but will now be able to trade up to permanent status. All told, just under 8000 Syrians are now temporary Swedish residents and will be eligible to stay in Sweden for good.

Before this new policy was announced, the number of Syrians seeking asylum in Sweden was over 1000 a month. But now? The sky’s the limit. Think about it: Syria’s population is 22.5 million, of which about 5000 are fleeing the country every day. More than two million Syrians have fled their country since the civil war began, and there’s no sign of that number abating. As for Sweden, its population is 9.5 million, of which about 1.5 million are foreign-born and about 2.5 million have foreign backgrounds. Earlier this year, Swedish Migration Minister Tobias Billström called current immigration levels “unsustainable” – only to be quickly shut down by Integration Minister Erik Ullenhag, who assured all and sundry that Sweden had no plans to tighten its immigration rules.

It would be far more interesting to see a ranking of nations by how much “hate” they have. Or really, their willingness to say that they hated something.

Just do street “ambush” interviews, because you are not after data, but emotion.
