Labrador puppy brought to Dallas Zoo to calm cheetah cubs

An unlikely playmate has been brought into the Dallas Zoo to help calm two male cheetah cubs: an 8-week-old black Labrador retriever puppy named Amani.
Amani is joining two 8-week-old feline brothers, Winspear and Kamau, born July 8 at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Va.
According to a zoo statement, Amani means "peace" in Swahili.
Since Labs are easygoing in public settings and since the pup will grow with the cubs, zoo experts believe he'll provide a calming influence for the cats.
Winspear and Kamau will join the zoo's Animal Adventures outreach program to help teach the public about their highly endangered species.

Oh, gosh...I love my cat, but if she weighed 30 pounds instead of 10, I’d have to hire a hit man to take her out.
Cats are cats. That dog is toast. If not today, soon.

I saw a film clip where a dog (no specific breed that I recall?) bonded with cheetah/lion cubs and they all got along famously. If you are not raised with prejudice, you won’t learn to be biased, is the lesson I learned from it.

My cat is the sweetest thing in the world, but if she gets excited, I can get hurt. She doesn’t mean to hurt me. But she’s a cat.
You can’t trust anything you see on TV or the Internet. And, one anecdotal case doesn’t mean all cats get along with all dogs. Maybe they were declawed? We don’t know.

Cheetahs are very trainable. They have been used in hunting for thousands of years. The young cheetahs will quickly acclimate to the dog.

I believe that the Egyptians or some other people of the time kept them virtually as pets, and walked them on leashes.

If you check the internet, you can find LOTS of successful stories of interspecies relationships.
And the “interspecies” is not relegated to “dogs and cats.” I have seen horses and goats, sheep and cats, birds and dogs, birds and cats...the list is endless.
And FYI, some countries will put a person in jail for asking to declaw a cat, since it is basically taking off the finger at the first joint. That, to me is cruel, though cats don’t need the front claws to climb trees or fight. They hang on with their forelegs and gouge with their hind legs. But the point is, it doesn’t matter if a cat is declawed. If you raise a kitten with a puppy, the chances are pretty darn good that they will get along for the rest of their lives.
They don’t know any different way to be because they haven’t been taught.

Agreed. The only thing that I will say about declawing a cat is that it's better than the alternatives of sending it to a place where who knows what will happen to it over time, or having it put to sleep. Some cats are incredibly destructive. The operation is performed with anaesthesia and post surgery pain meds. To me it should be a last-ditch effort by an owner who loves his/her cat, and wants it to spend the rest of it's long life with him/her. Such cats must be indoor cats for the remainder of their lives.
We very much like, but don't own cats as Mr. t. is terribly allergic to them.
