Labrador puppy brought to Dallas Zoo to calm cheetah cubs

An unlikely playmate has been brought into the Dallas Zoo to help calm two male cheetah cubs: an 8-week-old black Labrador retriever puppy named Amani.

Amani is joining two 8-week-old feline brothers, Winspear and Kamau, born July 8 at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Va.

According to a zoo statement, Amani means "peace" in Swahili.

Since Labs are easygoing in public settings and since the pup will grow with the cubs, zoo experts believe he'll provide a calming influence for the cats.

Winspear and Kamau will join the zoo's Animal Adventures outreach program to help teach the public about their highly endangered species.

I have no argument with that. I had a declawed cat, but at the same time, I learned that in Germany, and other European countries, you can be jailed for declawing a cat.

That’s not to say you need to “get rid of” a destructive cat. Some cats are just that way, and cannot adapt to “captivity.” If there is no alternative to the destructive nature, then by all means, have the cat declawed. Euthanasia is not an option as far as I’m concerned. Only old age and incurable disease should warrant putting an animal to “sleep.”

Agreed. Imho, the only reason a healthy animal should be euthanized is because it is dangerous to people.

Hi Trish and Face!

We have three cats who have all their claws, and we live with the damage.

They do have all sorts of places where they’re allowed to scratch, such as the 7’ cat condo we built for them and several kitty caves
and other plush, upholstered just-for-the-cat places to sleep and/or sit and scratch.

It works out pretty well. Thank goodness Vellux blankets are cheap. They can really tear them up, but we just toss ‘em and buy more
to cover the stuff we don’t want torn up and/or covered with cat hair.

I saw two yellows today and I had to stop and scratch them. They were both the absolute image of lab-ism.

What a good cat mommy you are!!!

There are all kinds of ways to deal with kittehs! One never needs to be cruel or ignorant. One just needs to be educated! And you and your hubby have obviously taken pains to BE educated! Fangs!

Thank you, my friend.

They respond a lot better to soft-spoken guidance, “persuasion,” and kindness than to drastic measures, angry voices, and punishment.

Cats do things by instinct, not to piss you off. Once you get that through your head, it all becomes much easier. [smiles]

My Aunt tells a story about walking into a hotel elevator and there’s John Wayne with a cheetah on a leash. Must have been Hatari! era I reckon.

Hi, TOL! You should see our house, and we don’t even have cats! Joey has chewed chunks out of one of the windowsills and we have tooth marks from puppies on some of the lower furniture. Animals of any kind tend to cause damage, one way or the other.
