It could be the last straw for hardcore fans angry at the long-running sci-fi saga's shift into space opera territory: R2D2, the diminutive robot star of the Star Wars films, has been spotted in a second Star Trek movie.
C-3PO's canny little friend was first seen briefly in 2009's Star Trek, which saw director JJ Abrams deliver strong reviews and impressive box office by rebooting the series with an all-action approach plus an entirely new cast as the crew of the USS Enterprise. Now the website io9 has pointed out that the droid can be seen being sucked into space one hour and 17 minutes into sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, which repeated its predecessor's success but has fallen foul of long-term fans.
At the annual Star Trek convention in Las Vegas last month, Abrams' film was voted the worst Star Trek film in the entire canon by "Trekkers". To add insult to injury, it was beaten not only by 1989's much-maligned, William Shatner-directed Star Trek V: The Final Frontier but by sci-fi spoof Galaxy Quest, which is not a Star Trek movie at all.

Industrial Light and Magic did the special effects, and apparently they have made it a game to sneak in something from their most famous works into Star Trek. The Millenium Falcon helped fight the Borg Cube in First Contact, so this kind of thing is nothing new.

Yes, Nemesis breaks the pattern of even-numbered Trek film being the better of the bunch.
As for ST-V, it certainly doesn't beckon the fans back for repeat viewings. However, when you pare it down to 1 hour (leaving the more objectionable content on the cutting room floor), break it into the classic teaser + five acts format and add classic Trek touches throughout, V does make a somewhat decent "TV episode":

I thought it was a wasted opportunity.
It wasn't a story that needed retelling. They had a blank canvas to set a new direction after the first movie, and they blew it.
What's the third movie going to do, have the crew find a ship where someone is inexplicably frozen in a shower?

I can’t believe she was 50 in Galaxy Quest.
I just watched the entire sequence where stuff gets blown into space and freeze framed several spots. There is one scene that might qualify as R2 but it’s no longer than a fleeting second and of questionable clarity.

Abrams just takes bits and pieces from TOS and slaps together something with some cgi effects.

Although both franchises are cultural icons, and the new entries of both have gotten progressively weaker over the years, Star Wars has always been MUCH better than Star Trek.
