MULBERRY, Fla. (AP)— Polk County sheriff’s deputies arrested Pastor Terry Jones, 61, and his associate pastor, Marvin Sapp Jr., 34,..He had said he was heading to a nearby park to burn 2,998 Qurans — one for every victim of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks...

Mulberry’s mayor, along with area elected officials, a sheriff’s deputy and several Polk County residents have talked about the need to express love and tolerance for all faiths on Sept. 11.

Can they do that? Arrest you for book burning?

Pastor Jones has a valid lawsuit against Polk County, I suspect. Or am I wrong?

If he decided to burn 2000 Bibles next week, they’d probably give him an open burn permit.

He is in the Polk County jail facing felony charges, so yes I would say they could.

Now if he had stated that he was going to burn copies of the Holy Bible, it would have been a horse of a different color. For that he would have received a police escort and a police guard.

If he decided to burn 2000 American flags, they'd probably five him a government grant, and Democrat politicians would be there to defend his right of free speech.

I know. But I suspect his actions are protected by the First Amendment - it doesn’t matter whether he burns Bibles, Qurans, or Cosmopolitan magazines!

I have read considerable portions of the koran. This would have been a very appropriate tribute to the victims of islamic terrorism. There are plenty of verses of wisdom copped from the Jewish Torah and Christian Bible. But the purely islamist verses are all criminal in nature and endorse the pillaging, plundering, raping, enslavement and murder of non muslims. It even includes an exemption for those who find murder distasteful, allowing the individual to lie to “infidels”, pretending friendship, but prohibits any muslim from sincerely befriending a Christian or Jew, or from working for a Christian or Jew. It is as vile as it gets. Terry Jones is a patriot and a hero. When our government officials say that islamic terrorists have “stolen” islam and corrupted it, they lie. The terrorists are purists who are actually following the dictates of mohammed.

"Can they do that?"

Huh? Are you thick? Why don't you go try to burn almost 3000 books on a summer day in a city park and see if your city cops don't put YOU in jail.

...the need to express love and tolerance for all faiths on Sept. 11.

What about the faith that burns Korans?
Why tolerate the faith that is murdering Coptic Christians for being non-Muslims?
Why be tolerant of a faith that has a death sentence for a woman for drinking a glass of water?
Should we tolerant of a faith that will not tolerate homosexuals? Or do we tolerate homosexuals who will not tolerate dissenters?
Can we not tolerate intolerance or is only intolerant tolerance not tolerated?
If we tolerate all faiths are we intolerant of all exclusive faith claims?

Can they arrest you for book burning?

Yes, if you douse the books in kerosine, throw them in a canister... then set down the road to the burn site on a public road. That’s not a political statement, that’s plum stupid.

If he tries this next year he’s going to have to have several people involved. One to carry the books, another to carry the kerosine/diesel/gasoline, and another to bring the matches.

Then I will become a professor of Anti American Studies at Harvard.

Then I will become a frequent guest on MSNBC.

Note: I do not consider Islam to be just a religion but cover for establishment of totalitarian political state.

I am giving Judd a pass on this one. I remember when his officers shot a suspect 68 times (fired 110 times) and when the reporters ask why? “I suspect the only reason 110 rounds was fired was that’s all the ammunition they had,” Judd said.

Islam isn’t a religion, period. It is a totalitarian political system disguised as such to take advantage of religious freedoms in countries like ours.

Of course it's a religion. A religion that doesn't play well with others.

"the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, esp. a personal God or gods."

Islam is a religion, but it is a false religion. Worse, it allows and promotes the worship of fallen angels. If performed by an unbeliever of Christ, it then promotes demonic influence and even possession.

He’d have been better to do it in his own back yard.

I agree with that. And he is probably wiser now. I do believe that it was politically motivated and I know, as much as I know that the sun will rise in the east Friday morning that if he had announced that he was going to burn 3,000 or three copies of the Holy Bible he would have gotten a standing ovation from those who arrested him. I am also confident that if he subsequently announced that he intended to include an American Flag, that every Democrat in at least the county and probably the state would have been in attendance. And a police escort to and from the burn site would have been provided. But it is what it is. That is where we stand today.

I agree with that and will add ,keep his mouth shut.

In this political climate, if one intends to go against the grain,so to speak, then one should keep as low of a profile as possible.

One is only to be for against what the State says one should be for against with negative responses fro the State. To Illustrate: Homosexuals and children: The State says or implies homosexuals having intimate contact with children is good. If one is for homosexuals having intimate contact with children and advocates it, good the State allows one to voice ones opinion citing Freedom of Speech. By the same token, if one is against homosexuals having intimate contact with children and speaks out, the State giving any excuse that pleases or none at all, silences them. Usually, they now invoke "hate speak" laws. But again, the serf, what once passed as citizens, are subservant to the master, which now is the State.
