FLINT, MI – It’s almost hunting season, and Meijer stores across the state are giving youth hunters the opportunity to get licensed for free on Sept. 13 and 14.
For the sixth consecutive year, Meijer has teamed up with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to provide hunters ages 16 and under with free small game, mentored youth and combination licenses for the upcoming hunting seasons.
“We hope it’s a nice promotion and it’s a great partnership with Meijer,” said Dennis Fox, the chief of staff for the Department of Natural Resources.
“We hope that hunters who may be on the fence, that this would edge them over and they’ll bring their kids along with them. So we’re thankful to Meijer for this and we think it’s a great opportunity for people who are looking to take advantage of this deal.”
According to DNR director Keith Creagh, during its 2012 free licensing period, Meijer issued nearly half of all of the state’s junior hunting licenses.
A Meijer spokesperson said that in order to get the free license, youth must be accompanied to a Meijer location by an adult, and should get a coupon from the store's weekly ad or mPerks digital coupon out and bring the free junior hunting license coupon to the store’s sporting goods department.
The coupon is valid for any junior hunting license or mentored youth hunting license and represents savings up to $15 depending on what license hunters get.
Meijer, Inc. – which has offered free junior hunting licenses to Michigan residents since 2008 – was honored as a Partner in Conservation by the Natural Resources Commission last year for its support of programs aimed at getting Michigan residents outdoors.
The story is sure to spark some spectacular liberal rants in the comment section of the site.
I prefer Meijer to Walmart myself and the competition of having both stores in town is good.
Hunting youth?
Free licenses for Young Progressives, CampusMuslims, and on and on? What’s not to like?
Can they just turn in the ears, or must there be antlers?

I always liked shopping at Meijers, way better than going to wally world. As far as hunting season goes, most of the shops in SE MI turn into ghost towns, full of hunter’s widows, the first week of November.
I’d give those stores a try.
That’s a headline that grabs an old codger’s attention...
Meijer is headquartered here in Michigan so they know their customer base is hunter heavy.
Hunting is great for kids like being responsible for a dog or delivering newspapers.
Of course and it’s a wonderful thing they are doing.
The headline’s “youth hunting license” can be taken out of context however and gave me a laugh.
Youth are pretty rare around here so we don’t hunt them often.
When WalMart began opening stores in Lansing (within the last ten years—we never had one before that) Meijer sales were hardly scratched but Target got decimated. Brings a smile to my face just thinking about it.
We used to go to a Pace warehouse store in Lansing that was basically like Sam’s club is to Walmart.
I also like Meijer for the fact that they sell a lot of locally grown produce.
I love Meijer. I remember when it was called Meijer Thrifty Acres.
I will be shopping at the Big Rapids and Cadillac Meijers soon as I will be home next Monday for a few weeks. Menards too. Can't wait.
There’s a Meijer store on either end of town in Jackson. Its nice that I can go to the one on this end of town without going IN town.
It was called “Meijer Thrifty Acres” when I was a kid growing up near Grand Rapids in the 1960s. My parents used to go to their store on Alpine Avenue just south of the junction of M-37 and I-96 about twice a month.
I think they are still a family-owned enterprise. Good for them.
We have them at opposite ends of town, but the problem with them is that they kill the small grocery stores. we had one small one downtown that was very convenient, but they had to shut down because they couldn’t compete.
