Hungry lags were ordered to stop snaring the pests and cooking them in their microwaves - because it upsets the prison's staff
Inmates at a jail overrun by rabbits have been hit by a bunny boiling ban after the governor found they were EATING them.
Hungry lags were ordered to stop snaring the pests and cooking them in their microwaves - because it upsets the prison's staff.
The jailbirds' culinary caper emerged after the Sunday Mirror revealed last week how the grounds of Ford open prison were being dug up by around 5,000 of the creatures.
Pest controllers were called in to carry out a cull. But Governor Sharon Jefcut was hopping mad when she found prisoners were already killing the bunnies as an alternative to canteen fare.
In a letter to inmates, she wrote: "There have been incidents offenders killing rabbits to consume them. This practice is unacceptable. Pest control systems are the only means that will be utilised."
Sources at the West Sussex jail say the letter also stated: "The killing of rabbits by any other means causes distress to staff members and offenders and is inhumane.
"Any microwave used for cooking contraband will be removed."
Jail chiefs will be embarrassed by inmates' poaching going unnoticed after years of criticism for its lax security.
In July murderer Paul Flint absconded from Ford by walking out of the front gate. He was finally arrested earlier this month in Horsham - around 25 miles away.
On New Year's Day 2011, 40 prisoners rampaged, setting buildings ablaze and causing £5million damage after they were ordered to take breathalyser tests.
The prisoners have microwaves but they are starving??
I don’t see the problem. They were killing the rabbits and eating them.
There MUST be a way to put a stop to this.
Take away the rabbits’ conjugal visits privileges.
What the heck is an “open prison” where prisoners have microwaves and get drunk and walk out the front gate??
Shouldn’t murderers be in a more secure facility than that??
or are those reserved for racists and right-wing rabble rousers?
Prison is about control. Including control of when and what you get to eat.
In that order, one hopes.
Not at this prison, apparently...given that an inmate (a murderer, no less) was able to simply walk out the front door.
How about frying?
So it is OK just to kill the rabbits but not eat them. Insanity.
The only ones allowed to take the fruit of the land are the Obamas.
You’ll see michelle discussing preparation of bunnyrabbits and carrots from the WH gardens soon.
Prisoners nearing the end of their sentences are often sent to open prisons to prepare them for life on the outside. The murderer was likely soon to be released on parole.
A preview of a Night of the Lepus remake?
If it offends you when the inmates eat the rabbits, perhaps it would be better to take steps to see that THERE WEREN’T 5,000 OF THEM ON THE FRIGGING PREMISES!! D’oh! Some people. Oxygen thieves.
I don’t know. Gollum says fish are best “wet and wriggling”.
Yep, no hunting in the "King's" forest. [facepalm]
I don’t see the problem either...they sell butchered rabbit in the grocery stores in Louisiana (only place I’ve ever seen it)....if the prisoners are able to catch them why can’t they eat them?
It’s a lot better to kill them and eat them than to just kill them for the sake of killing them. What is the lesson the prison wants to teach these prisoners, anyway?
You can find game at some of the better meat shops in Southern California, usually frozen.
Well, you can’t eat a microwave. (And why do prisoners get to have one??)
Heck, if they’re solving a problem at no cost to to the tax payers. I say go for it. They get food and the prison saves the cost of an exterminator. Win-win
I wondered where this was, so I googled “Governor Sharon Jefcut.” Maybe if I waited to read the whole article I’d find my answer. But now I’m not interested, after what I found. Seems Governor Sharon Jefcut eats something furry, and it ain’t bunnies. Ick!
Sounds like a description of Michelle Obama's ideal school.
Having become a fan of sushi in the last 10 years, I now prefer my salmon and tuna raw rather than cooked.
'Lesbian relationship': HMP Ford Governor Sharon Williams (right) is living with prison officer Jackie Jefcut. They are pictured here leaving an inquest in Leicester last August
I guess this was before the "wedding"
There’s a sushi place I go to where the salmon rolls are like 70% salmon. Delicious! Not like those places where there’s more rice than fish in the roll. So raw I’ll do — but Gollum can keep the “riggling” ones. I don’t like raw tuna much though, texture’s too mushy.
The "journalists" conveniently leave out the fact that Gov Jefcut's lesbian lover/wife is a prison officer. Gee, I wonder who it was that was "offended", and what it was that prompted the firm response from the Governor's office? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I keep thinking of the Simpsons episode, where Mrs. Crabapple shows the Fluffy & Fuzzy video, to teach the kids about sex. I guess now it’s Fluffy & Fluffy.
Hard to believe she could be offended at what the prisoners were eating.
what a sick looking couple
There are 2 types around here; the jackrabbit (which I wouldn't eat on a bet) and the cottontail (excellent!).
Any time you can harvest a cottontail around this place is a good day.
At least they don’t eat boiled bunnies.
Oh, I'm sorry - she doesn't have to explain why. She's the head of a prison, so the why is obvious - because if you don't do as she says, no matter how hypocritical or irrational she is being, she has you stomped.
By her husband the guard, probably, who is actually her wife, but you can't point that out, or that her being lesbian has absolutely anything to do with anything, like, for example, anger management issues or revenge fantasies against men, because if you do... you'll be stomped.
Liberalism is its purest and most direct form - obey, or die.
