Have You Received an "American Community Survey"? (Census)
9/16/13 | Self

Posted on 09/16/2013 3:28:02 PM PDT by Haiku Guy

Another FReeper indicated that he had received the American Community Survey, which is the 28-page extended survey from the Census Bureau that asks all kinds of invasive questions about income, health, living arrangements, etc.

I had also received the American Community Survey some time ago. I did not return it, and I have not heard from the Census Bureau since.

In the thread, it seemed like a number of FReepers have received this survey, which got me to thinking... Is it possible that the Census Bureau is targeting folks like FReepers, collecting data for political purposes?

A few years ago, I would not have believed it. Now, after the NSA and IRS scandals, I am beginning to wonder.

So, how about it. Have you gotten this survey? If so, what did you do with it? Did you fill it out, or did you roundfile it? Let's see if we can generate some data.

If FReepers have been targeted disproportionately with this survey, it would be a big deal. Hugh and Series. I'm talking Shower Time, big time.

I referenced your thread. It was suggested I post a new thread to gain some data.

"Is it possible that the Census Bureau is targeting folks like FReepers, collecting data for political purposes?"

That reads like a question from one of those slanted polls.

The correct answer is: "It is possible that they are and it is possible that they are not."

It would be better to know the probability that they are or are not based on evidence or inference.

No, heven’t received it.

But I was blessed to receive the multi-page, draconian USDA “census” a while back, in an envelop with dire warnings about compliance, wanting to know how big my agricultural operation was - size of my fruit orchards, crops, livestock, dairy, aquaculture, number of farmhands - legal and illegal - total wages, sales, profit/loss, etc, pertaining to my 1.3 ACRE residential property.

“If FReepers have been targeted disproportionately with this survey, it would be a big deal.”

Yeah, but I don’t think there is any way you could determine that by just getting responses on a thread like this. How could you tell if they were targeting us disproportionately, instead of just targeting us proportionately? You’re missing too many variables in the equation.

I got hit with that or something very similar about 4 years ago. It was from Department of Commerce Bureau of Census. They wanted to know how much money I spent on anything and everything. They even wanted to know all about my ATM withdrawals. If you spend money on anything embarrassing they want to know all about it. None of the letters were addressed to me by name. At first I ignored the letters. The letters kept coming. They sent people to bang on my door several times. Unfortunately I do not have a dog. It was an absolute nightmare. Ronald Reagan was 100% correct when he said that the scariest words in the English language are “I am from the government and I am here to help you.” I told them “Have you got a search warrant? No! GTF out of here!” This went on for about a year before they gave up. I saved all of the letters. Most people don’t believe me when I tell the story. It is hard to believe that this is happening in America, but it is.

Bottom line, it is just one more question to ask conservative candidates: “Are you in favor of returning the Bureau of the Census to just its constitutional mandate of an ‘actual enumeration’ and *nothing* more?”

That is, they are constitutionally authorized to record how many people there are. They should be prohibited from gathering any other data.

Yeah, but this isn’t even a good way to see if there is smoke. Say 1000 FReepers see this thread, and only ten of them got the survey. Who is more likely to chime in? The ten who got the survey or the 990 who did not?

So your methodology is determinative of the results.

I won’t even answer the decennial census as they want me to. I listed the number of people living in the house - that’s it. Got a call from a census goon, but told him to get off my property.

Ignored the first, got a second one even more dire a few weeks later - logged on here for advice.

Someone here pointed out the instructions lost in the small print, to simply write on the first page, “I am not farming.”

I did so - pissed off and feeling under duress, with renewed disgust at the federal leviathan, and renewed motivation to work against them in any way I could - I never heard back from them.

Not the America I grew up in.

The ACS is a common household-individual surveys that many researchers, including myself, use regularly. It is NOT designed to target conservatives or Tea Partiers, since it's been around longer than TeaParties. They use sampling design to choose which household is picked. If they found nobody lives there, they would enter 'zero' or vacant.

For more information, see American Community Survey in Census website.

Do you have to respond to the ACS? Yes. Responding to the American Community Survey (ACS) is about helping national, tribal, state and local officials make informed decisions with timely and accurate data. Just as people are required to respond to jury duty, get a driver’s license in order to drive, pay their taxes and report their income, they also have the obligation to respond to decennial census surveys. The ACS is conducted under the authority of Title 13, United States Code (U.S.C.), Sections 141 and 193, and response is required by law. According to Section 221, persons who do not respond shall be fined not more than $100. Title 18 U.S.C. Section 3571 and Section 3559, in effect amend Title 13 U.S.C. Section 221 by changing the fine for anyone over 18 years old who refuses or willfully neglects to complete the questionnaire or answer questions posed by census takers from a fine of not more than $100 to not more than $5,000.

I would agree that initially the survey was, apparently, a randomly target effort to gather data. To my mind, it is wrongheaded, because that information is none of the government's business, either in the specific or the abstract, but that's just me.

The question is, has the selection methodology been changed to target more surveys to active opponents to the current administration, specifically, FReepers. If so, that would represent a huge problem.
