General Motors Co. GM +1.89%is developing an electric car that can go 200 miles on a charge for around $30,000, officials at the largest U.S. auto maker said, offering a challenge to luxury electric-car startup Tesla Motors Inc. TSLA -0.58% Doug Parks, GM's vice president of global product programs, disclosed the effort on Monday at GM's battery laboratory and test facility in Warren, Mich., but didn't say when the car would be available. He said while the technology is available now, the cost of the batteries remains too high to be able to pull off the feat today.
GM's move to raise the profile of its battery research efforts comes as Tesla is challenging the established auto industry's claim to technology leadership with its $70,000 and up Model S. Mr. Parks' comments came just a few days after Germany's Volkswagen AG VOW.XE -1.50%said it intended to become the largest seller of electric vehicles by 2018.

The Chevy Dolt, is not a viable car IMHO. Nor is the Nissan Leaf.
A useful electric vehicle needs to be able to get me to work and back home and maybe some ancillary side trips on any particular day on a single charge. It needs to go through snow, have heat, window defrosters, head and running lights.
200 miles would be nice, it would give me some headroom in the battery in case plans change.
For $30K, I’d consider it. Save the day to day miles on my Toyota Sequoia.

They called it “Volt”, and it bombed.
My guess is that GM has to continue “developing” its electric car technology in order to avoid having to recognize its loss on the Volt fiasco. That is,
so long as GM pretends that it is on the verge of bringing some new great electric technology to market, it can continue to capitalize the money it has thrown at the Volt project and defer booking the true expense of keeping its government masters happy.

The Chevy Volt has a gasoline engine. While the range on electric only is very limited, combined with the gasoline it has a 380 mile range between fill-ups.
They are working on a Cadillac Plug in based on Volt running gear is my guess with that 2 door fastback look. Got to see one in all black the other day up close, no cammo and the plug in door in front of the driver door was a dead giveaway
And it will look like a crappy little egg car. Tesla is the only one that has made an electric sedan worth looking at ... but only if you’re filthy rich.

If it’s true it will be a piece of junk, cost $900,000,000.00 to develop and the asking price will be $225,000.00 with a warranty of minutes or until you drive 1 mile. Replacement batteries will run $175,000.00 with a life of 1 year and will weigh 6,000 lbs. The car battery will require 24 hours to recharge and will propel the car at a top speed of 45MPH for a distance of 200 miles.
The mac daddy administration will purchase 500 of these POS.at tax payers expense, and quietly scarp them after 6 months at being totally useless.
Yeah, my Toyota Sequoia goes 380 miles between fill ups too.
I already have a several gasoline engine vehicles, if I am going to buy and electric car then the damned thing ought to be all electric and get 200 miles on a single charge.
Isn't that the whole point?
By adding all of that electric crap to the car you have increased my maintenance schedule considerably and I still have to change the crankcase oil every 5K miles and all of the other fluids too.
I don't believe so, though some in congress and others seem to think so.
For me, the whole point is transportation at the lowest cost. If a plug-in hybrid can do that, why is all electric or all gasoline inherently better regardless of cost?
Ha! There is not a chance in the world that the sleazy and bureaucratic entity that took over GM in violation of bankruptcy law, contract law, and common law could actually produce a good electric car at a good price. If they did, I wouldn’t buy it because I don’t deal with criminals except at the point of a gun, and GM is a criminal organization. I am boycotting them forever and will not buy any GM product for any reason for the rest of my life. I won’t even accept a GM car as a rental.
GM is dead to me, and it’s not much of a loss.
I guess that's where we part ways on this... I understand the cost thing, but to me the trade-offs of a compromise yield generally poor results. The Dolt is not particularity good at anything, in any respect that a car can be measured.
It's not particularly good on gas while running on gas. It doesn't accelerate very well, either city of highway. The range, while on batteries is exceptionally poor. It's not very comfortable to ride in, nor is it much fun to drive.
I have driven a GEM...no thanks.
