dictionaries ad nauseam | 19 September 2013 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

aegis (EE-jis) noun
Protection, support, guidance, or sponsorship of a particular person or organization.

Example sentence:
"The French hope that by April an African force will have come under the UN's aegis.
--"The Battle Moves to the Mountains; The Economist (London, UK); Feb 9, 2013.

Etymology:
From Latin aegis, from Greek aigis (goatskin), from aix (goat). Aigis was the name of the shield or breastplate of Zeus or Athena in Greek mythology. It was made of goatskin. Earliest documented use: 1704.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

It barely gets scant attention in California...at least in the 1982s/napolean dynamite.

I’m a 3rd generation native Californian. I used to be proud of that. Not any more.

On recent trips, pan-handlers abound. We were cleaning out my mother’s house (she’s in assisted living now because she’s 100 years old) and we had a dumpster out front. Every morning we had to rout homeless folks out of the dumpster. They’d even get in there during the daylight.

Meth addicts broke into her house in late July and stole a lot of her things. Every median of every street has people holding signs asking for hand outs. This is not the state where I grew up.

I thought Mexican Indepence Day was September 16 — my birthday. I brought a Mexican dessert — Tres Leches cake — to the office as my birthday treat.

Three milks. Cow, goat and dog.

Or, if a miniature cake: mouse, hamster and guinea pig.

Unbelievable.

The only cops I know of that should stand down, are NYC cops, because they shoot the wrong guys on a regular basis.

They celebrate all week. All of the kids have projects to present and it’s Spanish 4 Honors so there is a lot going on. The food has been delivered, we visited with a bunch of her friends and now I can go run the park.

you should thank God you only made chiles. I was president of the Spanish club in HS and we made calamares fritas for Spanish night. That involved cleaning SQUID.

Our sauce today had goat cheese, cream cheese, sour cream, and walnuts. My house smells of garlic.

You should have invited Mrs.Clinton.

See my HW. Lmao

President of the Spanish Club? And you eschew cilantro.

That would be like being Captain of the Hockey team, and eschewing Gatorade.
