COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas A&M's move to the Southeastern Conference was something school president R. Bowen Loftin called a "100-year decision" when it occurred. Turns out it was one of several factors that helped contribute to hundreds of millions in increased donations for the school.
The university raised more than $740 million in donations in the past fiscal year, the school announced on Tuesday. The total, documented between Sept. 1, 2012, and Aug. 31, 2013, is a school record and more than $300 million better than any previous 12-month period in the school's history.

"I think it's noteworthy," Texas A&M Foundation president Ed Davis told the Bryan-College Station Eagle. "Normally, we don't spend a lot of time beating our chest with things like this, but this year has been rather spectacular."

Although I'm not an Aggie (Harding is my school), I admire aTm for many things including its military tradition and its alumni such as Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert. My perception is that liberals hate A&M...another reason to like it!

Aggies are not a Ptivate School. They actualy get millions of tax dollars. They just got beat by Alabama and their quaterback is a snotty crap head that will not make it through the season healthy. Aggies dress up like army folk but its all a sham. They are totally phoney.

Ummm...what part of "In spite of not being a private school..." failed to make what I presume you meant clear? I will concur that TAMU is indeed not a Ptivate [sic] school. Those are rather rare.
A longtime friend of mine, he lives in Hoover, is a hugh Bama fan. After the game last weekend, he thought the PBP guys (Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson) were homers for the Aggies. Here in Texas, a number of FReepers on our local board thought the commentary was decisively in favor of the Tide.
Any opinions one way or the other? I thought they played it fair -- praising Sumlin and Manziel as well as Saban and McCarron pretty much equally.
1. TAMU is a university, not a minor league sports team.
2. TAMU is a huge school, 50,000+ students, on the scale of The Ohio State University.
3. The Corps of Cadets is a small part of TAMU.
4. There are a huge number of TAMU alumni, and they are big supporters of their university.
football team still sucks.

Tide runs in my veins, but you are just plain wrong about A&M football. They may go the rest of the season undefeated. They scored 42 points on a good Alabama defense, FRiend.
But they were trying to spell h-o-r-n-y.
I’m a life long Tide Fan. Announcers almost without fail pull for the underdog. When it aTm was up 14-0 they talked up Bama. When there were 35 unanswered points by the Tide that shifted. I used to turn the sound down if I watched on TV. But it is too amusing not to listen. Verne needs to retire. He called each QB by the other’s name countless times. It was a great game. Like all football games any team can win on any given day. aTm is a great fit for the SEC. Missouri? Not so much. I don’t like Manziel’s personality, but he is talented and will probably go pro early. SEC rules!
Looks like A&M have eyes on your coach
The main chorus of The Aggie War Hymn isn't original music. It's an old ragtime era song, but not rag music, called "Hello, My Coney Island Baby". That's the melody. I saw Tony Orlando (yeah, THAT Tony Orlando) perform once on television. I once spied a barber shop quartet in Cleveland singing it on local TV. I figure old Wilson heard the piece in New York before shipping out to France and calculated it would be the perfect backdrop for verses really insulting to Teasippers.
It truly is a "shoot the lights out" kind of work: music to bar-fight by. Musically, the Band has a lot of respect for it. There's not much goofing around. Just play the music. The baritones, and reeds have a couple of features, up and down runs that connect phrases. The trombones do not embellish but provide a downward tracking backbone, one note per beat where the rest of the Band has two. The drum cadence alone qualifies as a dangerous weapon. Just for effect, the Band plays it twice. The student body sings the second verse twice, "Good bye to Texas University" Good luck for the Aggies.
Oh! I forgot to say, Hoover Alabama sux! Have a great evening and the Aggies will be a force in the SEC. I would assume that recruiting is up just due to the move to SEC.
