Come On, How Hard Can It Possibly Be to Make a Good Awards Show?
By Margaret Lyons

Sing a song, dance a jig, tell a joke. Repeat. How hard can it possibly be to put together an awards show that is festive and not excruciating? Apparently harder than we think, given how the last few years have gone. While picking a good host is definitely part of engineering a good awards show, it's not the whole ball game — Neil Patrick Harris is a good host, certainly, but last night's Emmys left something to be desired. So here's a simple list of ideas of how to put together a ceremony that feels like more than just a tuxedoed study hall.

OR what I learned... at the Emmys Sunday night--

What they said:

"We are both so very, very happy... to be here!

What they were thinking:

"My wife left me and I got an Emmy... for screwing a guy?

"Why couldn't I be the new Batman? I... am prettier!

"I hope this ends... before my Xanax wears off!"

What is, or better, who is... that, Mark?

"That's Toby Jones, the world's second worse... Truman Capote."

"All these people have no idea that I could... kill each and every one of them and not leave a trace--"

If at the end you want them to cheer
Keep it gay, keep it gay, keep it gay
Whether it’s Hamlet, Othello or Lear
Keep it gay, keep it gay, keep it gay

Well first, they’d need to honor something other than crap.

And the wonderfulness of each other. TV might actually be better if there were less specials interrupting the regular flow of weekly shows.

exactly.

The crap they put out on TV today deserves nothing but a trash bin, notice how in Netflix the old classics, the family or Christian message movies are the highest rated while the homosexual crap is the lowest?

Put out decent movies and programs and then they should get an award.

I admit to watching a small segment at the beginning....

.....they don't even try to hide their bias and slut anymore....

..could not watch another minute....

This is bad, as bad as it gets...

I hope some folks (that I hope are still decent), like Mark Harmon, was embarrassed....but who knows

I watch so little TV.....

Award shows are for the moronic. Their reward is whether or not we spend our money on their crap. I refuse to watch “pat ourselves on the back” shows and witness a room full of people who no more care about what goes on outside the gates of Beverly Hills than I do as to what happens in the Sandwich Islands.

It was even MORE disgusting here in the Reno market area.

They ran the live show starting at 5 PM and going to just after 8 PM.

Then-——wait for it....

They REPEATED the entire 3+ hours.

I called the local station & asked why this was happening & was told THE NATIONAL NETWORK demanded that they do the repeat.

What a great Sunday night for a person who only has antenna TV. 5 other stations of the 9 I can get were running infomercials. I turned it all off & went to bed.

Hollywood is about marketing CELEBRITY today, not product.

They have to keep the current crop in front of viewers TALKING about things whether they are politics, their favorite things about the 90s, or how big an influence Exile on Main Street was on them when they went to parties.

They keep the celebritards marching in line. If they get out of line, they don’t get on the shows and are no longer A-list or cover worthy.

I look at Grammy and Nobel Prize winners like Obama and Al Gore (they each won both) and I realize that they are not meaningful trophies.

They lost me, first when they glorified a drug user who took his own life, and second when they used the death of JFK as an introduction into just how wonderful TV really is.

Me too. It came on after the football game.

..could not watch another minute....

I feel ya. Especially when Baldwin walked up and interrupted the host, (like it wasn't scripted and practiced) The gang bang of previous hosts was so pretentious I made my son get up and change the channel (the remote doesn't work). He switched it over to his Xbox Game and I went back to my computer room.

If tv was so wonderful in its “teachable moments”, that show would’ve used the actor’s death as an opportunity to disclose the early death age of homosexuals, the drug dependencies of an unhappy hedonistic lifestyle, the health problems, etc.

Well it’s an awards show about TV. So given the quality of the product being recognized then why should we expect the awards show itself to be any good?

I liked the few secs in the last video (And at the Golden Globes:) on the link which shows Tommy Lee Jones... it’s about 3:29 ... I never found Will Ferrell funny or interesting. Another boring person from SNL.

This drivel is one of the reasons I got rid of my sat. TV (plus I watched it so rarely icouldn't justify the $80+ a month.)

I have a better suggestion: cancel all this self-congratulatory hype and replace it with a once-yearly compilation of kittens wearing party hats and bulldogs riding on skateboards. At least then someone would watch.
