Man arrested after crashing into trooper at 100+ mph

COLUMBIA — A man was charged Wednesday with crashing into the rear of a state trooper while driving more than 100 miles per hour on Interstate 26 in Lexington County.

Bryan Carroll Biggart, 39, of Bush River Road, Columbia, was charged with committing a hit-and-run motor vehicle collision that included personal injury, reckless driving, failing to render aid to a victim in a motoro vehicle collision and third-offense driving wit a suspended driver’s license, according to a release from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.

At 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, the red 2008 Saturn Vue driven by Biggart collided with the rear of a silver 2008 Ford Crown Victoria driven by S.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Erskine Abraham, 57, of Orangeburg. Neither Biggart nor the trooper were seriously hurt.

In addition to driving more than 100 mph in an area with a 70 mph limit, deputies determined that Biggart failed to give information or render aid to Reed following the collision with Reed’s marked patrol car.

Biggart also apparently drove the vehicle for five miles, to a rest area in Calhoun County, with the vehicle’s five air bags deployed. After calling his mother, and telling her he was not going back to jail, Biggart left the vehicle, deputies say. Biggart’s criminal history includes arrests for robbery and kidnapping.

Deputies conducted a manhunt for Biggart with assistance from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit, bloodhounds and deputies with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, state Highway Patrol troopers and a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division helicopter.

Officers detained Biggart at the rest area at about 8:30 a.m

I’m glad Trooper Erskine Abraham was not seriously hurt, but DAMN! You can slam a Saturn VUE into the back of a full size car at 100mph and not only NOT be seriously injured but be able to drive it for five miles? I wonder if they got those results in NTHSA crash tests.

Perhaps this time they will put Mr. Biggart away for good.

According to the article, he rear-ended the cop in a 70 mph speed zone. If the cop was doing the speed limit, the speed differential was only 30 mph.

A Saturn Vue is a small SUV with a transverse engine. So the 5 miles he traveled afterwards was likely what it took for the engine to puke after the radiator was smashed.

Are you series, the cop doing the speed limit??? More like a 10 mph differential which would explain the drivability of the Vue after the crash.

The article says "collided with the rear of a silver 2008 Ford Crown Victoria driven by S.C. Highway Patrol Trooper..." I'm going to guess the trooper was driving 70-80, and was rear ended by the guy at a relative speed of 20-30.

Sounds about right. With a busted radiator, it could also be leaking transmission fluid and after 5 miles there just wasn't enough left for it to pull itself down the road any more.

The speed limit was 70 so most likely the cop was in the 75 mph neighborhood. Hitting him in the rear at 100 mph would be similar to an accident at 25 mph.

It didn’t say the trooper’s vehicle, it said the trooper’s rear.

Length of skidmarks and scatter of the debris is sufficient to make an estimate of speed at impact that will stand up in court.

These little buggies are speed limited (due to the tires) at 112 mph IIRC. So he couldn’t have braked much (or any).
Also ABS is standard so not sure how much skid marks laid down.

You’re going to break traction with an impact at 100 mph. No braking necessary. Even if control of the vehicle is regained.

Actually the delta speed was likely more like 20-25 mph.

Troopers must not drive fast around those parts. In these parts you’d have to drive faster than 100 to catch a trooper.

You can if you believe the "official' version of events.

Except he was traveling at 75 mph, and rear ended. Try controlling a car at 75 mph when you’ve been bumped.....think NASCAR.

The tires, which I doubt were speed rated, were going 100. The vehicle was going 100. Just an ordinary bump in the road at legal speeds can greatly unsettle a vehicle not suited for triple digits, let alone an impact. You’re going to break traction.

When I read it was a Vue, I was surprised.

I fugired the transmission would be inoperable and/or it could never go 100 MPH.

Yeah, I’m getting that from everybody, so now I’m thinking maybe this guy figured that since the trooper was screaming down the road he would too and maybe the trooper decided to brake quickly.

Around here, the Po-Po get rear-ended because they absolutely refuse to get their rig out of the travel lanes while jacking up one of us on the side of the road.
