Environmental Groups Calculate Social Cost Of Natural Gas Boom
Counties with a high density of Marcellus Shale wells see more truck crashes, arrests and higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases, according to two environmental advocacy groups studying the social costs of natural gas drilling in Pennsylvania.
On Tuesday, PennEnvironment and Food & Water Watch released a pair of reports based upon their examinations of county-level data on everything from drilling rigs' proximity to schools and hospitals to arrest records and chlamydia and gonorrhea infection rates.
They used the numbers to bolster their argument for a halt to drilling in the commonwealth.
Sam Bernhardt, Food & Water Watch's Pennsylvania organizer, said the conversation about natural gas drilling centers around water and air quality, "but our new analysis shows that there are other problems with the issue of fracking that we should be considering as well."
The Food & Water Watch report, "The Social Cost of Fracking," drew from 10 years' worth of data on truck crashes, disorderly conduct arrests and chlamydia and gonorrhea infections in all of Pennsylvania's rural counties.

I'm working on a competing study which shows Fracking causes women to have larger, perkier breasts and to lose weight and tone up. I haven't decided what the study should 'prove' for men yet...but I think the first part might work for them as well?
Shut it down, Pennsylvania!
You’re way too blue to be benefiting from this.
Leave the natural resources to the red states!
I can see Al Gore quoting this study.
“It is absolutely true that if use oil then you will get the clap”
>>see more truck crashes, arrests and higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases
Is that all? I’ve heard that fracking also causes flying monkey attacks and an increase in bad hair days.
>>Fracking causes women to have larger, perkier breasts and to lose weight and tone up
Cool. That makes those flying monkey attacks worth the trouble!
LOL...gee, those Pennsylvanians must be a very sickly bunch. Perhaps these fair flowers ought to do without fuel altogether and walk everywhere for their health. Texans, Oklahomans, and North Dakotans just walk into the bank with those big checks, and it puts a real spring in their steps.
this might be true. My cousins girlfriends uncle knows a guy who went to work for a fracking company and boom, 3 years later hes got Gonorrhea.
People who frack without protection are just asking to get the clap.
The snappy, snarky, belittling quips from my fellow FReepers on this thread has made my entire day!
Last time I checked, when the lights go out, there is MORE sex and copulation. So, even with the slight up tick in STDs due to fracking, it has to be better than not having energy sources which will lead to more, longer dark nights and...just my thought process at work here!
Worked the oil patch as a kid...grandma used to say nothing good about those “oilfield trash”...lol
This IS satire, right?
Next they’ll tell us fracking causes “an urgent need for bowel movements and an inability to control them”.
Dr. Egon Spengler: Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...
Winston Zeddemore: The dead rising from the grave!
Dr. Peter Venkman: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!
So what did they use for a base-line? As far as the trucks, everyone should know PA has the worst roads in the lower 48. As for medical and arrest records - how much do the ag picker crews bring in each season? This is a pure poppy-cock report!
Ping to you for PA, P.O.E.
Farming in California must be stopped immediately! We must stop growing the world’s strawberries! If we stopped growing strawberries, the clap would disappear from the earth!
LOL - this is like revealing that the Pope is Catholic. One only needs to experience ANY form of the lefts response to fracking to know this is completely true.
If you see posts of interest to Pennsylvanians, please ping me.
This issue seems to have become a litmus test in the non-urban areas of PA
Thanks brityank for the heads up
Now, they are academics -- exalted by other academics.
The so-called "best and the brightest" are no longer very bright...and far from the best.
Somewhere near Adam and Eve?
raise this very same concern when the mostly Mexican and S. American migrants come over to harvest the crop.
Just don't sleep with their seesters.. ;-)
Now wait a min, the msm for a decade told me it’s all GWB’ fault.
