Family of Newtown victim rap gun control politics

The Paradis and D'Avino family knows guns. They've owned them and enjoyed hunting and target shooting. Shooting was just part of life, like the time after Thanksgiving dinner in 2009 when a guest of husband and wife Peter Paradis and Mary D'Avino brought out an AR-15 rifle he had in the car.

Together, with their children, the couple spent time shooting at a tree in their backyard on five acres off heavily wooded Route 61.

Their tragedy, they say, has been hijacked for political gain, to further a message with which they disagree.

"We're very frustrated mainly because the 26 families got lumped together. We're 26 families made of individuals that all have different opinions," Hannah D'Avino said. "It's like people are speaking for me and speaking for my sister. They don't know her and they don't know us."

Paradis and his stepdaughter, Hannah D'Avino, recalled that holiday afternoon recently. They sat their kitchen table and reminisced about Hannah's sister, Rachel D'Avino.

Rachel D'Avino died Dec. 14, 2012, inside Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. Twenty first-grade students and six staff members died when Adam Lanza, a 20-year-old Newtown resident who had attended that elementary school, stormed into the building with a Bushmaster AR-15 rifle. He shot his way through classrooms, then killed himself as police converged.

The rifle that killed their stepdaughter and sister was the same kind of military-style rifle the family had shot together that Thanksgiving Day. They're commonly called assault weapons, a term once applied to fully automatic weapons used on the battlefield but now applied to semi-automatic military copycats given the same look, but not the ability to fire continuously with one pull of the trigger.

I encountered someone from my past who had grandchildren in that school, fortunately not victims. They say that being kids they're doing quite well, but they have to be always aware of their development. They also say that keeping the spotlight on Newtown with those people being used as anti-gun advocates doesn't help in trying to have normal lives. Strange, they also say the kids are better off it they don't transition to somewhere else....they need familiarity.

It made me realize. These people must be sick of people asking them, everywhere they go.

Geez, this is the first post of its kind I’ve seen in the CT press. You’d think the entire citizenry of Newtown had turned into rabid gun grabbers.

Democrats and the MSM:

Never let a crisis go to waste!

Sorry - you don’t fit the meme.

I was surprised as well, and thought it noteworthy.

“The rifle that killed their stepdaughter and sister was the same kind of military-style rifle”

Thank you, Editor, for sliding that in! I wonder if it would still be “military style” if the color was red instead of black plastic?

I heard on the radio news that the school district is floating a bond to raze the school and build a new one nearby.

The rifle that killed their stepdaughter and sister ...

The rifle didn't kill them, it was the maniac with the rifle who did the killing.

I hate that frigging rhetoric.

I’m sure they meant to say “...rifle USED to kill their....” They wouldn’t mis-state something now would they? Nice that these two families have brains but won’t get much national coverage since they don’t fit the bloomie mold. I’ve had an irresponsible discharge due to my own stupidity. NOT the guns fault. Mine. Thankfully no one was hurt except the wood floor. A close friend’s son was killed because he and two of his buddies were “playing” with a shotgun. Not the gun’s fault. Lack of training and respect for the weapons. I am so sick of these asshats blaming inanimate objects for “acting out”.

I still want to know where the video is?

Its been what, 15 days since the Navy Yard shooting and we have video and stills. Why nothing from Newtown?

Totally agree on the video. The school had reportedly just installed a brand new security system, complete with digital cameras and an intercom system to “buzz” people in. My gut tells me that the office personnel might have buzzed the murderer in without checking to see who it was. That would place blame on people other than the shooter and the powers that be simply don’t want that.

Sometimes, they never release the video, or only years later. Especially with mass shootings with younger victims. It’s all up to the investigators and local authorities.

For example, I often hear people saying “but they showed videos of the Columbine shooting”, yet that only happened years later after people sued to get them released.
