Skylar with her blue eyes and final regrets and sadness is baby blue. Not Walts love for meth making. How many times did Walt use meth (never) compared to how many times he made love to Skyler? Usually urgent love making. Walt said the meth game made him feel alive but so did Skylar as his wife and sometimes nemesis. She was the sounding board for his lies. Conflicted soul mate and final beneficiary of his meth making along with the two children. Walt saying he made meth because he liked it is a cute trendy libertarian throw away line and only a part of his motivations. Of course a real man is part selfish user. But his dominant motivations were to provide for his family after he died.

Baby Blue is his trademark Meth. Skylar was not the love of his life; he paid her the respect of finally telling her the truth at the end: he didn't do it for his family. That was just a rationalization for evil. He did it because he liked it. He did it because it made him feel alive. And the obvious inference is, that she did not.

I don’t think so. When they made love urgently, it was always Heisenberg, still high on his thrill from committing criminal acts (or having the whole school wondering about him while he is right under their nose). Clearly, before that, their love life was more humdrum, because Skylar is taken aback at his behavior the first time it happens, saying he was acting like a different person.
Those were his last lines that everything he did before contradict. So I don't give them much weight. Sure the lines were cool and rebellious and had that "I did it my way" Frank Sinatra resonance. Don't be fooled. He did it for his family just like he professed for five seasons of Breaking Bad

No. Walt did it for himself. He TRIED to make himself and everyone believe it was for his family. It wasn’t. It never was and never could be. Ill gotten gains.
I loved the show. I loved Walt. But, he did it for himself alone and for personal ego reaons. There is and was no argument about that.
Walt was a ruthless child killing thug.
It wasn’t Skylar... even the meth . That was a tool. He felt emasculated He felt like he was going to die a smuck a weakling...a loser. When he knew he was the smartest guy in the room. So he sought a life of violence and crime ...a rush. He wanted to go out in a firestorm on his terms not societies. Not even Gods. The way he planned his last day was brilliant. I thought this season was a masterpiece in any art firm.
Agree. He certainly did it for the family. If his motivation was wholly selfish he wouldn’t have gone back to have a proper goodbye with Skyler. He sacrificed himself for her to make sure she was safe by taking on the nazis. No loose,ends, no threats, no question that he was the cook.

One caveat yes he loved has family...that’s why on his last day he made sure they were set for life. He lived Hank. That’s why all all debts were paid. Even his own.
Not according to Vince Gilligan, the person who created and wrote the show. Baby Blue was the meth. The last thing Walter White did was walk through the meth lab admiring the set up he and Jessie built. The very last thing he did was touch that piece of meth equipment lovingly, marking it with his blood. He loved the power, the control and the recognition cooking the perfect meth gave him.
It cost him his wife, his children, his name, and all their futures. The son who used to adore him, now hates him and will have to live with what Walt did for the rest of his life. His baby daughter will never know him. Walter White gave up his soul for the meth and all the money he left his son won’t buy any of it back.
Of course baby blue was the meth. It was a means to an end. If it wasn’t meth it would have been heroin..loan sharking...hit man.

Nope. He may have started out that way, but if he did do it for his family, he failed them because all they really wanted was him. He essentially abandoned his two kids by insisting on holding onto a lifestyle that gave him a thrill. That’s why the whole story is a Greek-style tragedy (with some comedy thrown in). He damaged or destroyed everyone he touched - and I’m talking about the people he professed to be doing this for!
It may have started out about making $700,000 for his family but it very quickly became about his ego. He was finally somebody, finally the best at something and recognized for it, finally in control of money, power and people rather than just being a mild-mannered, unimportant high school science teacher with a lackluster marriage to a bored wife, a mortgage, a crippled kid, and a disease that was going to beat him in the end.
It reminds me of that great scene in Bronx Tale where Robert De Niro tries to explain to his son how much tougher it is to get up everyday as a working man than it is as a gangster. Walter White was a genius. And he was an idiot who betrayed every single person he knew including himself.
A significant part of what the writers were trying to do is get you to buy into his pathology, because the truth is even very evil people like Hitler and Stalin are actually quite complex individuals; they are not the cartoon characters of our imagination. So too is Walter White. But ultimately he was prideful and selfish.
We are the top predators on the planet, and all of us have a tremendous capacity for violence and evil, even though we may very well love our wives and children. But our facile excuses shouldn't be taken for tuth.
