Einstein's genius put down to 'well-connected' brain halves

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Oct. 4 (UPI) -- The brilliance of Albert Einstein's brain may have been down to unusually well-connected left and right hemispheres, U.S. and Chinese researchers say.

Florida State University evolutionary anthropologist Dean Falk, using a technique developed by Weiwei Men of East China Normal University's Department of Physics, says the study was the first detailed look at Einstein's corpus callosum, the brain's largest bundle of fibers connecting the two cerebral hemispheres and facilitating interhemispheric communication.

Sorry CS, I couldn't resist it! :)

Einstein was no genius. If he was, he never would have told the apes what he knew. /sarc

So if your left hand knows what your right is doing, you might have a chance.

If not, thanks for playing!

Somehow, this explains the level of efficiency I have come to expect from most government institutions...

This can’t be.

I’ve been reliably told that intelligence has nothing to do with genetics, that we’re all potential Einsteins, just a matter of access to Public Education.

Now you say it’s Evolution?!

Can’t be. Obama tell me so.

This is what you get when you have people with a mechanistic understanding of the human mind.

Of course, they’d never stop to ask if the connections were caused by Einstein’s intelligence.

THE Right Brain vs Left Brain test ... do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise?

If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.

Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it.

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses logic
detail oriented
facts rule
words and language
present and past
math and science
can comprehend
knowing
acknowledges
order/pattern perception
knows object name
reality based
forms strategies
practical
safe

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses feeling
"big picture" oriented
imagination rules
symbols and images
present and future
philosophy & religion
can "get it" (i.e. meaning)
believes
appreciates
spatial perception
knows object function
fantasy based
presents possibilities
impetuous
risk taking

I saw her as moving cw, but I was able to look away and then see her moving in a ccw motion. What does that say about my hemispheres?

Same here.

I saw her turning cw, thought "But she's simply, objectively going cw, what's to discuss?" --- Then took a long blink and tried to see her going ccw (focusing in her arms rather than her leg) and sure enough, I could see her going ccw.

I wonder if it’s related to the fact that we’re female....

I thought of that!!

Supposedly the female brain, though it has 4% less cells than a man's, has more dendritic connections between brain cells and a larger corpus collusum. This means women can transfer data between the right and left hemisphere faster than men. Men tend to be more left brained, while women have greater access to both sides.

This gives women an advantage in cases of brain injury, like trauma or stroke. If a woman has a stroke in the left side of the brain, she may still have language "stuff" on the right side, and so finds it easier to relearn and to recover more rapidly and completely.

Or so they say!

Tagline.

I vaguely recall reading something describing what you have posted about the ability for a woman’s brain to shift between the hemispheres.

Can’t remember for sure, but I am thinking that the piece I read said that the corpus callosum in a woman is thicker and allows for more transfer. (But I may be remembering this incorrectly.)

That quick transfer factor probably accounts of the fact that I exhibit some behaviors that totally baffle — and sometimes annoy — my husband, while we are working together on some project in the garden that requires some sort of analytical thinking. While his hyper-focused engineer’s brain is making calculations about how much mulch we’ll need or how much lumber to buy for yet another planting bed, I often stop in mid-sentence to comment on a plant or a bird or the neighbor’s flowers.

Clockwise.
I was, however, able to get the image to switch by looking the “Stationary” foot. Once I could get that to go counter clockwise, I was able to view the entire image to move in that direction, at least for a few rotations.
