RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — Riverside County supervisors Tuesday are expected to vote on an ordinance requiring all pit bull dogs older than four months in unincorporated areas of the county to be sterilized.

A hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. for the measure sponsored by Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone.

“I have a funny feeling it’s going to be a unanimous vote because we’ve seen such heinous attacks by these vicious dogs in the past few years, so I think the public is standing behind us on this one,” Stone told KNX1070.

“Our goal after we pass the ordinance today is to pass it on to our 28 cities, so that we uniformly have some type of ordinance in place for the entire county,” he said. “These dogs are being bred to be dangerous, to fight, to kill, and as a result we’ve seen a lot of terrible incidents, so it’s been a significant public safety problem for our residents.”

The supervisors voted 5-0 in September to move forward with the proposed ordinance, which is to “protect the public’s health and welfare from irresponsible owners of pit bulls by mitigating the over-population of unwanted pit bulls,” the Department of Animal Services said in a statement.

Under the measure, an animal could only be exempted from the law if its owner proves that the dog belongs to a registered breeder, is trained for law enforcement duties, serves as an “assistance dog” for a disabled person, is in training or licensed in another county or has been certified by a veterinarian as having a health defect that would be aggravated by sterilization.

“I don’t think we’re trying to get rid of the breed. We’re allowing legitimate breeders to go ahead and continue to breed,” Stone said.

According to officials, 20 percent of dogs impounded and 30 percent of animals euthanized in Riverside County are pit bulls.

“People are raising them and finding out they are dangerous, they are sticking them in our pounds and our K-9 centers, and we are euthanizing them and we want to reduce the euthanasia in our dog kennels,” Stone added.

My 81 year-old mother went to the pound to find a canine companion and the only dogs she saw were pit bulls and pit bull mixes.

My 82 year-old father walks their new shih tzu in a neighborhood where pit bulls get loose every once in a while.

So, my dad carries wasp spray with him - in order to walk their little dog.

Better plan would be to sterilize pit bull owners. Would cut down on future welfare participants.

Mandatory sterilization... as if the dogs would ever volunteer.

This may seem like an onerous requirement, but in my county, for years, now, ALL dogs must be licensed and to be licensed, must be spayed or neutered. This is specially true if the dog is allowed (or facilitated) to run loose by itself at any time.

A significant percentage of dog owners are idiots; a smaller percentage are dangerous to themselves and others.
Society must deal with those as best we can.

Our animal shelter spayed and neutered pit bulls for free, but very few owners took their dogs in. All our dogs are spayed and neutered, including the two pit bull mixes. We’ve even hauled in a few neighbor dogs to get clipped and get their shots.

The people should vote to sterilize supervisors to protect the public’s health and welfare from the idiotic county officials.

Where I am you pay a higher fee for unaltered animals. I actually don’t have a problem with this but it should be applied equally to all breeds. Unless you have a pure bred that you are actually going to breed animals should be altered. For male dogs this actually improves their health, it’s just moron owners that think neutering their dog affects their machismo that keeps the subculture from being responsible.
