If you head over to San Jose Mercury News, youll see an article posted over the weekend talking about the impact of Obamacare on individuals. Whats most interesting is that it shows the evolving opinions from those who previously or currently support the healthcare law, and those opinions, unsurprisingly, vary depending on their personal situation.
For instance, Marilynn Gray-Raine, a breast cancer survivor, is thrilled to find out that her premiums dropped several hundred dollars per month. This was primarily because her cancer was no longer penalizing her as a pre-existing condition. Ending the penalties for pre-existing conditions was one of the few parts of Obamacare that received widespread bi-partisan support. In fact, during the famous Healthcare Summit, Paul Ryan & others specifically mentioned that they believed any health care reform should include it.
But of course the cost of offsetting the risk of covering someone with a pre-existing condition is going to find its way into someones wallet. For the purposes of this article, that someone was Cindy Vinson, a huge supporter of Obamacare who is seeing her premiums skyrocket.
There are many choice quotes from Cindy that show how the reality of Obamacare is not squaring with her rosy expectations, but the one that prompted my headline was this:
Of course, I want people to have health care, Vinson said. I just didnt realize I would be the one who was going to pay for it personally.
As Lady Thatcher famously said, The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other peoples money.
This very simple concept was somehow not relayed in a way that pulled people to our point of view in 2012. They continued to rally around a law, ignorant to the cost to themselves, only now awakening to its difficulties.
There were other enlightening quotes from Obamacare supporters saddled with the new reality of their premiums. Tom Waschura, who saw annual premiums for his family raise by $10,000 per year said this:
I was laughing at Boehner until the mail came today, Waschura said, referring to House Speaker John Boehner, who is leading the Republican charge to defund Obamacare.
I really dont like the Republican tactics, but at least now I can understand why they are so pissed about this. When you take $10,000 out of my familys pocket each year, thats otherwise disposable income or retirement savings that will not be going into our local economy.
Apparently, Republican messaging was so bad in 2012 that harsh reality has become the only thing capable of getting people to understand where we are coming from. This guy had to be saddled with $10,000 in new bills to finally believe that Boehner wasnt a rich jerk trying to hurt the poor.
There have been many that have said full implementation of Obamacare is the only way to shift public opinion enough to make repeal a realistic option after 2016.
While Im still not sure if I buy that line of thinking, Ill say this: the painful consequences of reality have a much better track record of pushing conservative ideals than Karl Rove ever has.
Does that mean Im sold? Certainly not. But it feels good to see people discover the truth. Id like to see more.
Hilarious to watch all of these morons who voted Obama, now act surprised and pissed that their health insurance and taxes are going up.
Precisely why I thought they should have stood down after 2012 and said that they will allow all of Obamacare to go through so long as people realized that Obama owned the consequences.
I believe that the a complete conservative victory and an MSM/liberal defeat may only be possible when the commies are unable to blame anybody but themselves for the inevitable collapse their ideas have caused.
This is the beauty of the position that Republicans find themselves in right now courtesy of the courage of Ted Cruz. Long after the hub-bub and supposed voter anger regarding the shutdown and debt ceiling are gone there will still be Obamacare. It is NOT going away. And the voters will know that the Republicans did everything they could to stop it.
The inside the beltway media would have you believe that the shutdown matters more, and it does, inside the Beltway. But 99% of us do not live there. Unfortunately, the hostage wing of the Republican Party (McLame, McConnell, etc.) who never get out of the Beltway and are easily controlled by the media bought this hook line and sinker. I suppose I can sort of understand it as they have been hostages for so long. But what I can’t fathom is how, after it has become apparent that Obamacare is the real issue, they continue to buy the story their increasingly desperate captors are selling? How do they continue to turn on Cruz and Lee who are showing them the way? How do they not get that in comparison to the Obamcare, a government shutdown doesn’t amout to an ant hill?
Let us give Barry Soetoro more credit than just the illegal Obamacare Takeover to bring us together.
The National Mall in DC was opened up today to bally-hoo the making of illegal alien invaders from Mexico magically legal so they can vote for Democrats.
Additionally, let us consider the emotions today of all those Federal Employees who have young children.
They are not going to be happy, happy, happy with Barrys AG Eric Holder for stopping the National AMBER ALERT Program over this past weekend.
Surely, Mr. Fast and Furious Holder thought this Amber Alert cancellation through and made an exception for Michelle Obamas two darling children?
BTW, I wonder if Barry, General of the Senate Harry Mean Ol Guy Reid, and Colonel of her former self Nancy Always in a fog Pelosi realize that other Federal employees ALSO have young children that need to be protected by the National Amber Alert Program?
BTW, BTW, the boy-toy, wanna-be dictator Barry Soetoro, aka Mr. Michelle Obama, COULD order his personal Corporate Jet, Air Force One, to be mothballed, by Executive Order, of course. (He must have a few blank EO forms lying around his empty chair, or his Golf bag - - - ).
That simple gesture just might, could, show that Barry also feels our pain.
Barry could also BARRYCADE his own personal Golf Course, and BARRYCADE the Oceans, only on Federal land, of course. (Governors are so touchy these days about THEIR States shorelines)!
Prohibition was a good idea, too. And that was a Constitutional Amendment.
IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED AND IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED NOW BROTHERS AND SISTERS. What an axxwipe.
When I hear pre-existing condition...I flame. Everyone of us has a pre-existing condition.
They’re already paying for 46% of medical care, so it’s not a huge step from there.
sorta like “Tough Love” for liberals ;-)
The biggest lie of all is that they were told they were going to get healthcare. They are buying an insurance policy, and not a very good one - quite another thing altogether. Pity nobody in the GOP is hammering that point as far as I know.
Yep. The disappointed people in this story are not gonna become Conservatives. They will unfortunately be the genesis of a pretty robust national movement for Single Payer.
Reminds me of how I felt after enrolling in a record club.
Got those “free” records- then was forced to buy the ‘selection of the month’ or something else I didn’t want... unenrollment was problematic... maybe that’s where the Dems got their business model for Obamacare!
Why if they are screwed up by step one would they now go in for step 2 single payer?
No, this affects their wallets and they are not going for it IMO.
I would agree with except for the fact that they now have proof that even single payer will personally cost them money. Lots and lots of money.
People should understand, now that we have your attention, that whatever sticker shock you’re seeing now with ObamaCare will be doubled with the amnesty of 30 million more deadbeats.
Not all libs are convinced yet that Obamacare is a fraud. I've been seeing comments on other websites by libs who are still trying to sell the idea that Obamacare is going to lower premiums and increase access to health care for everyone.
Let em suffer!
That's easy, Flip.
They're part of the elite 1%. The ruling class. Reality doesn't touch them in their personal lives, like it does us ordinary citizens. They've got gold plated health care plans and a guaranteed lifetime retirement plan that effectively insulates them from anything they pass in Congress.
Not only that, they have lobbyists and big business interests throwing money at them for access and favors all the time. Most of them go to Congress as people of modest means, and retire as freaking millionaires.
The Beltway cocktail party invitation list is far more important to these professional traitors than their oaths of office or duty to country and the people.
Of course they're going to scream and holler at a renegade patriot like Cruz. He's threatening the established order of things, and they don't like it one bit.
