autodidact [aw-toh-dahy-dakt]

hear it pronounced

noun

a person who has learned a subject without the benefit of a teacher or formal education; a self-taught person.

Origin: 1525-35: from Greek autodidaktos self-taught, from autos self + didaskein to teach]

I watched the Tina Fey movie “admission” on a plane last week. (Slim pickens).

They used this to describe a student that she thought was her given-up-for-adoption son.
