Penny For Your Martian Thoughts: This Is How A Coin Looks After 14 Months On The Red Planet
universetoday.com ^ | October 9, 2013 | Elizabeth Howell on

Posted on 10/09/2013 7:09:52 AM PDT by BenLurkin

A high-power camera on the Mars Curiosity rover snapped a picture of a 1909 American penny featuring Abraham Lincoln. The coin is used as a calibration target for the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) that is at the end of Curiosity’s robotic arm. In just over an Earth year on the Red Planet, you can see the bright copper is muted by lots of Mars dust.

Although the image has public relations appeal, there are scientific reasons behind picking that particular calibration target. It is supposed to measure how well the camera is performing, which is important as it zooms in on interesting features on Mars.

Reminds me of a story that is sort of in the same vein.

Back a few months ago scientists said that if you visited the sites of the Apollo moon landings, the American flags would be unrecognizable having turned a solid yellowed-white as the unfiltered ultraviolet light from the sun would have quickly destroyed all the color pigments in the fabric.

I’m glad that we are reminding ourselves - even on Mars - that it is God in whom we should still trust.

“Edgett donated the special Lincoln penny with funds from his own pocket. The 1909 “VDB” cent stems from the very first year that Lincoln pennies were minted and also marks the centennial of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The VDB initials of the coin’s designer – Victor David Brenner — are on the reverse side. In mint condition the 1909 Lincoln VDB copper penny has a value of about $20.”

Why 1909? I would have thought 1913.

I would have thought penny from the year the probe was launched — though that would mean that it was just a token and not an actual coin.

Looks like a Philadelphia Mint 09; back then Philly didn’t put the “P” under the date, but Denver and San Francisco did.

The S VDB would have cost a pretty penny, so I’m surprised the government didn’t waste money using one.

Maybe they should have used an 1894 O Barber Dime.

Nope... apparently “just” a non-VDB plain 1909.
