Weekly Standard ^ | 10/9/2013 | Jim Swift

Earlier today, an unidentified bearded man took it upon himself to bring his lawnmower and a few tools to the Lincoln Memorial to provide free groundskeeping work to the closed federal monument.

It's unclear how much of the expansive lawn behind the memorial was mowed, but Park Police were alerted and three cruisers with multiple officers showed up.

THE WEEKLY STANDARD watched the officers observing the mystery mower from a distance

One thing that leftists won’t stand for is an individual “doing the government’s job”.

They got really mad when people in some broke city were pitching in to buy police cars and fire trucks.

Any better pictures? What is that flag he’s carrying?

We don’t have enough Park Police to keep a normally unattended monument open to the public, but we have lots of Park Police cars responding when a patriotic American wants to maintain the grounds for his fellow citizens? I wonder what, if anything, goes on in the head of a petty tyrant who thinks that makes sense.

In the article it says, “a Blue South Carolina Flag”.

OK, I thought the photo was the only part of the article because often these tweet-type things have nothing else.

It’s the SC flag.

I also couldn’t tell whether the person was black or white, and I couldn’t get the photo to enlarge. It could be either, and either would be good, but it would be interesting if it were a black person who was sick of getting stomped on.

I wonder if he’s from SC or if that flag was chosen for symbolic reasons.

What message does the SC flag send when we have the most divisive White House in our history using the federal government as a weapon against the people?

The police probably didn’t want to arrest him because carrying the flag converted his actions to political speech - protected by the First Amendment to the extent that Obama and our courts care, and with a message that the far left doesn’t want emphasized by an arrest.

We all appreciate this guy’s efforts, but there are completely legitimate liability concerns here.

If he injures himself, or injures another person, even slightly, there are going to be lawsuits against the federal government which will not be covered under the typical insurance plans the government carries.

And, if they allow him to do this, what happens when dozens of other volunteers show up to work at other government properties?

Really, there is no legally prudent choice here except to say “no.”

Really? Liability for mowing the grass that people all over the country do on their own front lawns every day?

Should we just resolve ourselves to be issued government bubble wraps to protect everyone from ever falling down or getting scratched?

That, and, let’s face it, he could be a lousy mower!

I appreciate his spirit and effort, though.
