Sprite May Be the Best Hangover Remedy, Scientists Find
New York Daily News ^ | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2013

The lemon-lime soda seems to help the body better metabolize alcohol, according to Chinese researchers. Plain soda water had a similar effect.

If you're searching for the magical elixir to cure a hangover, Chinese researchers may have found it. The solution: lemon-lime flavored soda Sprite. But if you prefer to skip the sweet stuff, soda water is a good alternative, findings showed.

Some of the adverse effects of alcohol are thought to be caused not by the alcohol itself but by the process of the body trying to break down the alcohol.

After drinking, the body goes through two stages of a metabolic process to break down ethanol. First the liver metabolizes it into acetaldehyde by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and then into acetate by aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). Unlike acetaldehyde, acetate is considered harmless and may even be responsible for some of the positive health benefits of alcohol consumption.

But exposing the body to acetaldehyde actually causes the symptoms of a hangover, including nausea and a pounding headache.

Better yet, Don’t drink and save your kidneys and liver. This is advice I should have taken 50 years ago. I have been sober over 30 years now and my kidneys and liver have not completely recovered.

Beer mixed with V-8 juice and squeeze of lemon. Works like a charm.

Alcohol is a good thing, not bad, although it can be abused.

Western Civilization and Christianity have always utilized it.

OK peeps, you can take this to the bank. If you’ve drank enough alcohol that you’re pretty sure you’re going to be hungover in the morning, take 2 Advil or similar product and 2 large glasses of water before you go to bed, and you’ll be golden.

Add a dash of Worcestershire and a couple of drops of Tabasco to that...and you have achieved the perfect cure.

Hell, I don't even drink, and I find need a tall drink of that in the morning... every day. You know, just to start the day right.

Sure beats the hell out of Mountain Dew... or crab juice.

I don’t drink booze, but Sprite is also the best for settling an upset stomach. Other sodas, even Diet Sprite, don’t do as well.

I watched a Tosh.0 episode in which he was a carnival barkey. All the tilt-a-whirl riders ate bananas then slammed the Sprite. Not a hangover in the bunch.

Exactlly - or you can just hydrate...a big reason for hangovers is that alcohol removes water from the blood stream thickening the blood and increasing blood pressure. Using aspirin thins the blood and helps. However, adding water early will limit the reduction to the point that you won’t get a hangover to begin with. Even drinking a few glasses of water before you start drinking will reduce the potential for a hangover.

A half-liter of water before bed and mega-B supplements in the morning.

And, tomoato juice to clear the lower half.

The best hangover cure? Two that I know of from my days of nipping the hair of the dog. First one is, have another drink. The second, stay drunk.

Drinking Sprite, or any other softdrink, instead of ETOH will result in no hangover. It’s amazing. :’) Thanks nickcarraway.
