I was driving along one day when a crow flew up above the road and dropped a black walnut right in front of my car, so that I would run over it and break it open. It gave me quite a fright!
They are still bird brains.

Having been at the beach and seeing seagulls drop clams and oysters on the rock jetty, I totally believe it!

Well Sheryl Crow figured out how to wipe her ass with only one square of toilet paper - pretty amazing when you figure out how FOS she is.
She will never live that down. That was more than ten years ago.
The crows here in Northern California drop walnuts on the road, let cars crack ‘em, then go get the yummy nutmeats. I think this crow practice is spread far and wide now! Smart little buggers.
My wife and I take in homeless and handicapped parrots. We currently have 15 birds, everything from a little budgie and four cockatiels up to two cockatoos and two different types of African grays. Crows are right up there with parrots in intelligence, which is about like a four-year-old child. One of the African grays communicates with us in English and even makes up his own sentences that make sense. One of the cockatoos has a padlock on every opening of his cage because he’s figured out how to undo every latch from the inside and escape. We recently lost a beloved little Goffin’s cockatoo who was scary-smart. When she looked you in the eyes, you could see the wheels of her mind turning as she sized you up and decided how she could get you to do whatever she wanted. It really was like looking into the eyes of another person, and a very bright person at that.

Tokyo crows are scary smart. I can’t decide if I love them or hate them. They’ve got moxie. They love mischief and have an obvious sense of humor at times. One of the most impressive things I learned about them is their trick of stealing other bird’s eggs — and cooking them.
Seriously. The crows would take the eggs and bury them in the hot rocks next to the rails during the hottest summer midday hours, and then come back hours later after the interior cooked enough to be edible with their beaks, break it open, and chow down. That’s a three step process, and probably above the ability of a three year old, if you get right down to cases.
However, it must be said, they are not graceful flyers. Their wings use a lot of brute force and have none of the grace of a swallow — or even a pigeon. It is, however, effective and they get where they’re going, and get what they want. Just not pretty.
If there were a patron animal for chess players, I couldn’t think of a more worthy animal than the crow. Cunning to a fault and capable of unbelievable sneakiness, chutspah, and ultimately cerebral. If that’s not a good description of a good chess partner, I don’t know what is.
A raven is even smarter than a crow.

Not a bird, but we had a hamster for a few years that would escape her cage, cruise the house, stockpile dog food, and would be asleep in the cage when we would get up in the morning. Because she always went home, it took us awhile. Then we started seeing her scurrying through the house... oh, she is getting out.
That is astonishing. You must get a great kick out of them.
