I have an aunt who has a home with geothermal heat not far from downtown Boise. Her heating bill is about $40 per month tops. You've got to pay for the piping and regulation.
“What more do you need?”
How much is a box of .40 S&W?
Excellent point. One my husband makes quite often. (:
A lot of the U.S. expats who retire to Central America live on Social Security as their primary source of income. Few have nest eggs from pensions or cashing out equity when selling homes in the States. When the SHTF, many expats will not have the means to support themselves because they can’t legally work where they’re at.
And to be fair, America does have all that stuff too, including the Red States.”
Yes, yes, that is true.
The difference between a decently cultured restate city and say Paris is the scale and grandeur. And the proximity/ease of transportation.
Over the last few years, I have tried to do what I can to promote high culture in the US, and to make it, ahem, more “European”. In that limited sense, of course. If we could up the game a bit in the best areas of the redstates, then we have the best of all possible worlds.
Of course nowhere in the US can ever compare precisely to Paris or Rome. But I guess part of the point about staying here as opposed to just punting and going over there is that if you were to do that, then you would basically be resigned and say, western civ is dead. But even though it is dead, I am going to enjoy some of the carcass while it is still available. That would be the argument at least....
Better though if we could breathe a little more life into non-socialist areas in the US......
Non-citizen gun rights? Yeah, good luck with that. You have none.
We were looking at some property in Panama and the guy showing it took us to meet his attorney. (like you said you need an attorney to buy)
So, we are talking basically what a nightmare the US has become. The attorney tells us that something like 61 people (total) work for the entire Panamanian tax authority.
Then, he waves his hand in a dismissive manner and says, "If one of them walks in here, right, now, you know what I'd say to them? I'd say, get the f*ck outta here"
My kinda place.
You overlook Panama. Over a century of U.S. citizens living and intermarrying with the locals. No antigringo attitude in this melting pot. Will survive economically because of the Panama Canal. Can de-peg Balboa from the dollar if inflation hits the latter.
Costa Rica is beautiful and the people are friendly. However, wouldn’t trust the government, the cost of living is too high (including electricity), and expat homes are frequently robbed. There are better options.
I would say Sweden is more free than, say California or Massachusetts at this point.
Ofcourse, you are right, it is Europe. But I am saying if circumstances got so I felt like it was time to go--that is an option for me. If I have to do socialism, then I may as well get some of the upside. A laid back way of life, an interesting locale, people I like, relative safety.
You might not like the climate but the country of Estonia is very, very nice. A thoroughly modern infrastructure, they speak English and it is very affordable. As a bonus, they hate the Russians.
I felt incredibly safe in Panama the entire time. Even walking through some questionable areas, I never felt too “at risk”.
No, we did just concentrate on Panama City. We thought about going back for a month in the summer to get a feel for life outside the city.
And better yet is for American patriots to organize and galvanize in non socialist areas and pull out all the stops in these places. Better than showing a lack of fighting spirit altogether.
Thing is, global jihadists often show much more fighting spirit and resolve when things aren’t going their way politically and culturally - look at Nigeria, Thailand, Kashmir, Kosovo until the late 90s, The Caucasus. All places where they have been a political and cultural minority and refused to let it hamper their fighting spirits. It would be nice to see American conservatives show that level of fighting spirit for a change.
My wife and I are seriously checking out Belize... may make a vacay trip in the next couple years to scope it out in person.
We’re not going to live out our years in an islamo-marxist country.
I wonder what's going to happen to Panama when the Chinese finish building the new canal through Nicaragua. That's going to hurt Panama, especially after sinking all that money into the third canal.
China had also approached Costa Rica to do a canal there, but somehow Nicaragua won out on that one (but China did build that new stadium in San Jose, and took over and finished the toll highway from San Jose to the Pacific coast).
Agree re Panama. One of the many reasons I obtained permanent residency there after checking out alternatives. Still a U.S. citizen and pay taxes to Uncle Sam.
well said.
We need tens of thousands of Ted Cruz Republicans!!!!!
Sounds like an option for me after one year too - if it is an option for those looking for work as opposed to simply retirees. Do they have a viable job market? And I mean ANY kind of job market here, from blue collar and white collar on up. What is it like for someone who is under 30 as opposed to a retiree?
