So the zombies are at your door. Death is upon you, but the gun shop is just a block away. You make a run for it, and you make it to the most extensive armory for miles. Time to make a decision: Which guns do you grab? Contrary to popular belief, not every gun will do the job the same, so to help make up your mind on which guns will save your life, here are my eight best guns for the zombie apocalypse.

Three weapons are always necessary, no matter the circumstances: rifle 5.56mm or 7.62mm to reach out and touch someone, 12 gauge shotgun for close in support, and a 9mm or better when you run out of ammo for the first two weapons.

Then, if you are blessed by the Lord, one 81mm mortar, and Claymores.

Jmho.

5.56mm

You want a gun chambered in the same caliber that the enemy uses, and ideally one similar enough to your enemy's weapon that the magazines and other parts are interchangeable.

That narrows it down to:
AR-15 (primary choice)
M-14/M1A (gotta love the heavy metal)
Remington 700 (it's a stretch, but it meets the above qualifications.)

I am aware that the AR is not as reliable as an AK, nor can you bury it in boiling radioactive mud under a monster truck rink for a year and then whip it out and have it work perfectly, as you can with an AK. But when an AK finally DOES break (and they do), or you run out of ammo, you won't find spares or reloads on the bodies of the "zombies", either.

Looks like you’re set with the addition of a pistol.
Don’t worry about the 30-06, the SKS will do what you want.

"the Federal law that requires you to pay a $200 tax for your silencers."

Now there is a Law that needs to be repealed so old guys with bad hearing won't incur further damage.

In that situation, anything that’s loaded that you know how to use will be just fine.

The Cletus Readiness Package:

I tend to think that life in the USA will go on in peaceful fashion but that doesn’t mean I won’t be able to answer the brown-shirt knock on my door.

(i) Taurus Judge with multiple quik-loads of 45 ACP and 0.410 sabot slugs (ask me about this load when I answer the front door!)
(ii) 16 guage Semi-auto with “bandalero” buck shot loads back by sabot deer slugs as “swat repellant”. 16-GA cause it is a great bird gun, too.
(iii) double, separate layers of cinder block -no grout-with 2 shooting lanes, intrinsic.
(iv) half-face, grey-canister protective mask (thank you mr. employer)

If I am forced to hunker down (see -iii- and -iv- above) I suspect I will be found watering the Tree of Liberty.

That’s kinda my take. Though a nice 30-06 with a scope would do it with style. :-)

"Maybe in an A-10 warty-hog."

I'd guess that a slightly modified P-38 could handle one.

Shooting zombies is just target practice, you want the guns that will let you carry lots of light ammo and large magazines, with little recoil that lets you rapidly engage multiple targets while expending as little of your own energy as possible.

Lever action rifles take you off target and use your energy, shotguns do the same and the ammo is too bulky and the weapon capacity too small.

What you want is a simple bullet injector that can inject bullets quickly into lots of targets and for which you can carry lots of rounds for.

As an 07/02 FFL/SOT my choice is my Ruger 10/22 with a Norrell trigger pack and integral suppressor. FN 5.7 for crowd control;) FNP90 for final protective fire. M1917a1 for final stand.

Marlin model 60 .22lr. Fun as heck, cheap as heck, and while the round isn’t too big by any means, it will take stuff down. Not an elephant gun, but it will keep a lot of marauding urban types at bay.
