Major issues with Java
self

Posted on 10/14/2013 1:27:23 PM PDT by Don W

Since last September's update, the Java in my mom's 'puter has not worked properly, and she is unable to go use her "Pogo" site.

I have tried using the MS uninstaller, and the Oracle site's uninstaller with no success. The folks at Staples went through the programs line by line and removed Java that way, but that only lasted a week, and the problem came back.

No further Java updates have been able to install themselves, and she is stuck with a non-functioning Java v7.7

Help, if you can. Snide apple and linux comments will be ignored

I also tried removing sun through dos, and had no luck that way either.

Any other ideas?

You may need to install Java directly from Oracle’s web site.

Then make sure your “JAVA_HOME” environment variable is set to the directory of the java installation. Make sure the bin folder in the JAVA_HOME directory is in the PATH.

You can confirm this if you go to the command prompt and type “java -version”.

It’s a long shot, but you could see if she has a system restore point from back before the java update.

I’m running Windows 8 with Chrome Browser and Java 7.25 the latest is 7.40. Pogo runs just fine under that for me.

I have had serious problems with java since the last update (I’m on Windows 7, usually in Firefox), but I just uninstalled and reinstalled from the Oracle website, and now my favorite game site (which is tickettoride for a railroad game) suddenly works with java again for me.

So they may have just gotten something straightened out today, at least it is working for me, the first time in weeks.

Windows Vista and IE 9.0.8112.16421, update 9.0.21KB2879017

The earliest restore point on the unit is from 6 months age.

I have tried both the auto-install and the manual install from the Oracle site with no luck.

How is it that so many people seem to have these sorts of issues? But not everyone?

I really don’t know. My laptop (identical to mom’s except I use windows 7 and IE 10) runs the site flawlessly.

I so feel your pain. I can offer you no solutions as I never found one for myself when this happened to my husband’s computer. He also runs on Vista (which is awful). We did change browsers...firefox I think...and he was able to play some of the POGO games.

Then I just had to wait for JAVA to come out w/ a new version to ‘fix’ the problem. I did not/have not updated the JAVA from September just to keep from having the problem again.

Good luck. I do hope you can figure it out for your mother. I know my hubby was not happy being w/o his favorite POGO games.

I don't have the problem because I have Java disabled as a security risk. If a site wants Java, it doesn't want me.

When crap like this happens (very infrequent), I re-image my machine.

And my wife’s.
My Mom’s
My brother.
My preacher
My friend(s).

I just don’t screw with this stuff. Too painful.

Of course this is hinging on somebodyt creating a solid image in the first place.

Go to Control Panel.

Change the "Category View" to "Large Icons"

double click the Java icon

The Java Control Panel will come up

click the "settings" box

click "delete files"

check all three boxes and click OK.

Hope this works.

I may have misled, in that the update that caused the problem was from September 2012, not ‘13.

My apologies.

See if you have any luck using Revo Uninstaller.

That is an awesome program. I recommend it to everybody, even if you don’t have something that needs it right now.

Unfortunately, there is no Java icon in the control panel, though it still exists in the add/remove programs list.

We have tried to remove it at least 24 times now, and it’s starting to get tiresome, to say the least.
