Here's Why Vermont Has the Highest Rate of Illicit Drug Use in America
Yahoo Finance ^ | 10/14/2013 | Pamela Engel

Vermont has the highest rate of illicit drug use in the country with 15% of people saying they've used within the past month (compared to 4.2% in Utah, where illicit drug use is the lowest), according to 2010-2011 surveys from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The Northeastern state ranked high for almost every type of drug, from marijuana to cocaine.

This trend is a consequence of factors including weather, politics, and proximity to big cities, according to Barbara Cimaglio, the Vermont Department of Health's deputy commissioner for alcohol and drug abuse programs.

"You have everything from the colder climate, which tends to be a reason some people give, to more liberal attitudes, to higher income levels, to people having more access, but I don't think anyone knows for sure," Barbara Cimaglio told Business Insider.

Because we have a bunch of permissive idiots is the main reason.

Doesn’t single-payer cover that?

I really gotta get out more. This is the opposite of my mistaken impression of VT.

Higher income levels in Vermont? REALLY? I hated the place when i lived there, it was like poverty-town, everyone worked for minimum it seemed, and there was really no hope of a decent paycheck to be found in the state unless you were a high-tech import in Burlington.

"You have to go through Vermont to get to some of the bigger cities like Boston"

They do mention Montreal, so I can see Vermont being along the way if you're going to Boston, but not too many people who are going to NYC or Philadelphia are going end up saying, "Look! I'm passing through Vermont!"

I’m more concerned with Colorado having the “highest” reported Cocaine use.

Maybe it’s because dropouts have found their way to VT since the 1960s. I don’t use drugs, but I’m not uncomfortable in the VT culture, which is artistic, laid back, and individual.

Why Vermont Has the Highest Rate of Illicit Drug Use in America

If your fellow citizens had elected Bernie Sanders to the US Senate you'd be taking drugs too.

They traded their souls for a godless, materialistic, relativistic, extreme leftwing worldview. What did they get in return? Bernie Sanders and Patrick Leahy.

There is no reason for hope for anyone who goes over to the dark side.

Being a Vermonter, I can tell you that the cities are part of the problem here. We have the guys from Manhattan and Springfield Mass. moving up here and plying their trade, Two major drug busts in the last month netted 16 and they were all out of staters.

Compare with the pro-God, pro-life, pro-gun, pro-military, pro-freedom, anti-sodomy state of Oklahoma:

For those on the left falsely accusing Conservative of being racist, note that Vermont is 97.95% white and they don't get a pass here for supporting communism.

Re: 18

You should update your 2008 Oklahoma map and show Red as 'Palin and whatisname', or something. Otherwise it is a bit embarrassing.
