A teenager thought to be possessed by the devil was subjected to a violent crucifixion-style exorcism by four religious extremists, a court in France heard today (Monday).
Three men and a woman belonging to the Seventh Day Adventist Church are accused of kidnapping, and acts of torture and barbarism against the 19-year-old.
The young woman, referred to solely by the name Antoinette, was barely alive when police found her in a flat in a housing estate in the Paris suburb of Grigny.
Her tormentors are accused of tying her up like Jesus on the cross, and keeping Antoinette in the same position for seven days during 2011.
They believed that this would exorcise her from her sins, and get rid of the devil inside her.
In the meantime Antoinette was regularly beaten, and only allowed small amounts of cooking oil and water so as to stay alive.
Eric Deron, the teenagers former boyfriend and the defendant who is thought to have instigated the assault, believed he was on a divine mission, Essonne Assizes, near Paris, heard.
Deron is on trial along with his mother, Lise-Michelle Babin, and two men called Philippe Grego and Lionel Fremor, all from the French Caribbean.
According to statements read out in court, Deron was convinced his girlfriend was possessed because she leapt on him while shouting incomprehensibly.
She had met her alleged assailants in 2008, through the Seventh Day Adventists, an America-based Protestant church which has millions of followers throughout the world.
Jacques Bourdais, barrister for the defendants, told French news agency AFP: To them, she was possessed, that is why they did not call a doctor.
'You call a doctor when someone is sick, when someone is possessed you exorcise them.'

I hope the court throws the book a them. And I do hope the poor torture victim.
Really? This always struck me as a "1970s religion", I guess because the only 7DA folks I knew were when I was a kid. I don't know anyone I've met as an adult who subscribed to it.
Jesus was nailed to a cross. He may or may not have been tied up also. But he wasn't just tied up on a cross.

They're a cult, pure and simple. They do not hold to orthodox Christian beliefs and should not be labeled a "protestant" church.
Read the article. The Adventists claim that these in question were run off from cult before this cruelty took place.
I know of an Episcopalian diocese who hands over all of their cases of exorcism to the Catholic diocese because one of their Episcopal priests went mad while trying to perform an exorcism.
“all from the French Caribbean”
There’s some amount of superstitious practices in that region. Perhaps, that was a bit of an influence, but the extreme abuse was pure craziness.
That is incorrect. Maybe you are thinking of Jehovahs Witnesses.
7DA's absolutely believe in the Trinity and the Divinity of Christ.
Thank you: yes. This is not Adventism.
I beg to differ. Perhaps you’re confused. The people I know who are 7DA are quite into the Trinity. The whole vegetarian thing is a little wierd....
There’s a saying. Haiti is 95% Catholic and 100% Voodoo.
Pretty rough weight-loss clinic, I’d say.
Facts Seventh-day Adventists Won't Tell You
Seventh-Day Adventism - Orthodox or Cult?
Is Seventh-day Adventism a cult?
It's a cult, pure and simple.
Our local 7DA joins in ecumenical services.
Speaking as someone who's on the outside looking in (so to speak) when it comes to religion...
When using the word, "cult": are we speaking of the "Jim Jones drink the Kool-Aid obey the charismatic leader's every word" style cult, or the "Golly, the neighbors are nice, but their religion is just so...weird" cult?
Exactly. I don’t think it had anything to do with 7th Day Adventist. They may have joined the 7th day adventist, but probably never let go of their voodoo culture from the French Caribbean.
I had knee surgery in Porter Hospital in Denver go wrong and I was there for 17 days. The 7AD meals were the worst in my life. I’m not surprised their adherents went bat-shit crazy.

No shrimp, scallops or lobster...ever? No bacon? Aaaarrrrgggghhh!
The French Caribbean - isn’t that Haiti? Just asking. Sounds like they are mixing a bit of Christianity with voodoo.
Yup, mis communication.
I should have pinged you here -

Glad I am that I don’t live there.
>:-)
I have old, valued friends who did mission work in the “French Caribbean.” area Oh, the stories they would tell! La VouDou is, I would say, definitely implicated.
And just because they join in on ecumenical services does not legitimize their system of beliefs. If anything, it makes them even MORE suspicious.
Sorry, but 7DA are in the same category as Mormonism and Jehovah Witnesses, just to name a few, in being labeled as a cult.
LOL.....I’m habitually “untoward”...;)
I *knew* you’d understand! ....and that voodoo dolls have feelings too. :)
