England's failure to qualify for World Cup would hit economy by £2bn

Reaching Rio would trigger an advertising bonanza as the country gears up for the massive tournament.

Pubs would be packed, football shirt sales would rocket and supermarkets would be cleared of booze and snacks.

But if the Three Lions lose to Poland tonight at Wembley and crash out of the play-offs, businesses up and down the country will be counting the cost. City experts calculate the once-every-four-years party adds between £1bn and £2bn to the economy.

Financial boffin David Bick reckons the tournament is one of the few sporting events which is watched by everyone throughout the nation.

England’s last match at a World Cup finals – the 4-1 defeat by Germany in South Africa four years ago – had a television audience at home of nearly 20million.

Gerrard: I'll be the proudest man in England if we win at Wembley and get to Brazil
‘There’s huge expectation among the fans. There is pressure, but you’ve really got to be excited by games like this. ‘I’m looking forward to it and I’m sure everyone else is. At times the team have played with too much fear and pressure, but Roy has created an atmosphere that is very relaxed but very professional.

Why the negativity?
According to the Kubler-Ross model of grief, England supporters are very much in the final stage of mourning over the national team. Having moved through periods of denial, anger, bargaining and depression (with many still revisiting these emotions during the course of each game) we have finally progressed - this is the age of acceptance.

The evident conclusion is that this is an intended means of self-preservation and protection, football's eternal warning that if you don't expect anything, you won't be disappointed. "It's not the disappointment that kills you, it's the hope," fathers and grandfathers wisely tell their youngers.

BS. There is no new money. It would be spent on something else. If they host the game and foreigners come in and spend, that adds money.

England braced for another fraught encounter of the World Cup kind
Roy Hodgson has described a World Cup without England as unthinkable. It is of course eminently thinkable, not to mention achievable given the tension of these last-ditch occasions

England's Golden Generation is dead, and the era when World Cup qualifiers mattered died with it
This morning I awoke with a frisson of excitement. Today is the day. World Cup qualification beckons. And not just any old World Cup; a World Cup in Brazil.

The Copacabana. Samba football. Tear gas and anti-austerity protests. They’re now just 90 minutes away.

But it was just a frisson. A mild tingle of expectancy. And then it was gone, quickly pushed aside by a craving for a piece of toast.

England failure could be a blessing
Brand me unpatriotic, accuse me of treason and call me every name in the book, but a part of me does not want England to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.

Believe it or not, it may be what we need - a realisation that we aren't up there with the best. Let's face it, we've won the World Cup on home soil, semi-final once in 1990, reached a European Championship semi-final twice in 1968 and on home soil in EURO 1996.

Although many of you out there see England as a common asset to international tournaments, we actually didn't qualify for the World Cup in 1974, 1978 or 1994 or the EUROs in1964, 1972,1976, 1984 or 2008.

Other than that we usually crash out in the quarter finals and it's usually at the hands of Portugal.

I remember when the US hosted that disgrace. They interviewed some soccer hooligan about it. He said something to the effect “we’re coming to Harlem with chains and knives and we’re going to show those yanks how to rumble”. Harlem? Ha! They’ll shoot you in Harlem, but it’s not top ten in the scary neighborhoods in NY list. It’s not even the worst neighborhood in Manhattan.

Ireland played Italy at Giants Stadium. This bar owner in Hoboken went to Ireland and posted bills all over Dublin saying “if you’re coming for the World Cup, come to O’Neill’s in Hoboken, NJ.

In case you didn’t know NJ is about 40% Irish and 40% eyetalian progeny. So I went to play golf that day and came back to a police barricade. I had to show my driver’s license to get into town.

Apparently 200k people descended on a town that is 1 square mile. Cops from 15 towns were called in and the Mayor declared a state of emergency. It was a fucking ghost town. They reopened the bars at 8pm for the residents. Best bar night ever in Hoboken.

England didn’t qualify. Probably saved that guy’s life.

England v Poland is a home game for both sides – that's London
There's a big football match tonight. It's the England v Poland World Cup 2014 qualifier and it's a home game – for both sides. That's because it's at Wembley and London is home to at least 150,000 Poles, making the British capital the 24th-largest Polish city in Europe. (Glance at the full list of Polish cities ranked by size, and London would sit precisely mid-table.) An estimated 18,000 tickets out of 90,000 have been allocated to the "visitors", which means that they will have a larger, more vocal support than many teams would expect at home.

England can't mess up this time, says Steven Gerrard
"Yeah, a big massive picture of the Croatia game in 2007," said Gerrard, when asked what memories he will draw on for inspiration.

"It's a memory I'll have to take to the grave with me. One of the lowest moments of my international journey."

Two billion pounds?

Chump change.

The UK’s socialists will put that up the spout in five minutes.

Obama does it in less time than that, and he’s just getting started.

40 years on but the pain is still sharp for Martin Peters
MARTIN PETERS was offered the chance yesterday to watch a clip of the penalty he won in that infamous Poland game of 40 years ago. He politely declined.

“I have never watched the match again,” he said. “Why would I want to watch that? It has too many bad memories,”

Those painful memories are England drawing 1-1 with Poland despite having 35 shots to the Poles’ two. Jan Tomaszewski made several great saves and, with inspired defending, his side hung on to reach the World Cup finals.

England’s World Cup-winning manager Sir Alf Ramsey was sacked and players such as Peters, Martin Chivers and Allan Clarke would never play in a World Cup again.

Peters, 70 next month, says he remembers the game as if it was last week and does not want Steven Gerrard and his players to feel the heartache that he did by messing up against Poland tonight.

STOP LEWANDOWSKI
Make no bones about it, he is Poland’s Plan A, B and C all rolled into one.

Poland possibly have the most dangerous attacking threat in the group with Robert Lewandowski. If he hurts England tonight, there will be question marks over the whole campaign – especially given England’s inability to win games back-to-back in this campaign.
