He said something to the effect “we’re coming to Harlem with chains and knives and we’re going to show those yanks how to rumble”. Harlem? Ha! They’ll shoot you in Harlem, but it’s not top ten in the scary neighborhoods in NY list. It’s not even the worst neighborhood in Manhattan.
Ireland played Italy at Giants Stadium. This bar owner in Hoboken went to Ireland and posted bills all over Dublin saying “if you’re coming for the World Cup, come to O’Neill’s in Hoboken, NJ.
In case you didn’t know NJ is about 40% Irish and 40% eyetalian progeny. So I went to play golf that day and came back to a police barricade. I had to show my driver’s license to get into town.
Apparently 200k people descended on a town that is 1 square mile. Cops from 15 towns were called in and the Mayor declared a state of emergency. It was a fucking ghost town. They reopened the bars at 8pm for the residents. Best bar night ever in Hoboken.
England didn’t qualify. Probably saved that guy’s life.

England can't mess up this time, says Steven Gerrard

Those painful memories are England drawing 1-1 with Poland despite having 35 shots to the Poles’ two. Jan Tomaszewski made several great saves and, with inspired defending, his side hung on to reach the World Cup finals.
England’s World Cup-winning manager Sir Alf Ramsey was sacked and players such as Peters, Martin Chivers and Allan Clarke would never play in a World Cup again.
Peters, 70 next month, says he remembers the game as if it was last week and does not want Steven Gerrard and his players to feel the heartache that he did by messing up against Poland tonight.
Poland possibly have the most dangerous attacking threat in the group with Robert Lewandowski. If he hurts England tonight, there will be question marks over the whole campaign – especially given England’s inability to win games back-to-back in this campaign.
