Michelle Chapman is trying not to cry over spilled milk.
The Surrey, B.C., resident was shocked to discover last month that a June fender bender she caused that left almost no visible damage to either vehicle escalated into a $4,800 writeoff. She was more shocked to discover the reason why.
Theyre writing off the truck for spilled milk, said Chapman, whom the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia is holding responsible for the claim.
The tale of the curious claim begins in June, when Chapman was stopped behind a black Dodge Dakota truck in her Chrysler Sebring sedan at a Vancouver intersection. When the truck advanced into the intersection, Chapman followed, but after she failed to see it braking again, she struck the vehicle.

I believe it. When I was a kid, we spilled some milk in the trunk of our car. We were smelling that (especially in the summer months) for YEARS afterward. It never did go away.
**it happens, no point in crying over spilt milk.
Lye water kills spoiled milk.
The other thing is if the claim is only 4,800 the insurance company will pay it without complaint because it would cost much more than that to contest it in court.
Its all about the money.
If the woman pays for the write-off, does she get the title to the truck? Seems only fair.
One thing a young driver must learn is that when a vehicle is merging into traffic in front of you, never take your eyes off them until they are gone.
Many times they start to pull out and turn chicken and jam their brakes on, leaving you scrambling to stop,
Do not look for an opportunity to follow them out. Keep watch on them until they are gone.
Yep. I learned that lesson the hard way.
The milk was probably spilled before the accident too
It is not at all impossible to get spoiled milk odor out of a car. I’ve personally thoroughly deodorized a Beemer from decayed people odor.
Isn’t easy and isn’t cheap, but it can be done.
when I had hazmat training 15 yrs ago they considered a tanker truck full of milk hazardous. Can’t recall exactly why but the instructor said that much milk and calcium concentrated will kill all the plants in the vicinity.
an insurance adjuster I knew would complain about how in any accident they would throw away all the food, even if undamamged. One time he responded to a truck tipped over carrrying 10,000 pounds of frozen turkeys. Only a few spilled out on the road but the whole load had to be hauled away to the dump. He filled up his trunk and anyone and everyone he knew, including me, got 2 free turkeys for Thanksgiving that year.
She should. Somebody should get the title, and she'd have the most money in the truck. The guy with the truck would be screwed, though, because he probably can't replace it for that amount.
We had a situation here locally that was similar...friend’s dad ran a wrecker service and junkyard and they would have had to figure out a way to get rid of a truckful of chicken, or deal with it reeking. They hauled it in within a very short time period and told everyone they know to get their butts over and bring anything they could sterilize later, free chicken for all.
No one got sick, lots of us got free chicken that otherwise would have been thrown away. I’m sure even then he broke a ton of laws, but no one cared.
Sounds like somebody’s pulling an insurance scam.
