Giant oarfish found off Catalina Island

(UPI) -- A snorkeling instructor discovered a dead 18-foot oarfish off the coast of Catalina Island on Sunday.

"It just amazed me," said Jeff Chace, director of the Catalina Island Marine Institute, adding that it took about 15 people to carry the leviathan onto shore.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime discovery," he said.

The instructor was snorkeling in 15 to 20 feet of water in Tony Bay when she stumbled upon the carcass after seeing a "half-dollar sized eye starring at her from the sandy bottom," Chace said.

Chace said it is unclear how the oarfish died because there were no marks in it. Samples have been sent out to researchers at UC Santa Barbara and other places in an effort to learn more about the fish and how it ended up in Toyon Bay. Oarfish are rarely found dead or alive.

Because he has nowhere to store it, Chace said he'll bury the animal in about 3 feet of sand. Once it decomposes in a couple of months he plans to dig up the remains and mount the skeleton.

Clearly, another victim of the heartless Tea-Party conservatives in the House and their evil Government Shutdown.

It died because of humans, I’m sure. It probably left a note.

Man allegedly sold deer, raccoons to Illinois eateries
By

KNOX, Ind. — A Chicago man sold deer, raccoons and other wildlife to markets and restaurants in that city’s Chinatown district for use in meals, Indiana conservation officers said Tuesday.

Alexander Moy, 47, was arrested Monday in Hamlet, about 80 miles from Chicago in northwestern Indiana, on a charge of illegally selling wildlife, Lt. Tom Torsell of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said.

The arrest followed a two-year investigation during which Moy bought wildlife, including turtles and fish, from undercover officers, Torsell said.

It was probably bullied by a school of paddle fish and committed suicide.

I’m not certain if oar fish have actual bones or have a large amount of cartilage in their skeletal structures...but if it is cartilage, Mr. Chace will be disappointed in a couple of months.

“sloppy writing I suppose”

Using Spell-Check as a proof reader saves money on editing but if you goof and it spells a word it gets a pass.

Well it looks like they were BUD/s students and probably not the same fish, but it's been done before.

Look at how they proudly hold their catch. All smiles and stuff. I wonder how the paddlefish got those poor saps to smile like that.

LOL almost looks like one...on the farm I found one of my young goats with a tape worm hanging out of its behind...no red strip...Nothing like searching a 3 acre pasture checking all the piles of goat poo for other tape worms...rewormed the flock with a wormer that specifically took care of tapeworms...
