Skip to comments.Argumentum Ad Monsantum: Bill Maher and The Lure of a Liberal Logical Fallacy

Lets get real. It doesnt matter if you think Monsanto is evil. Genetically modified food is safeno matter what logical fallacies will lead liberals like Bill Maher to believe.
If Monsanto has anything to do with it, it must be evil. That seems to be the prevailing opinion on the monolithic biotech company. Following that logic, if they produce corn or soybeans or another crop that has been genetically modified (GM), those too must be evil. Thats Bill Mahers reasoning at leastreasoning that lures liberals away from science and towards denial.
Making the leap from Monsantos business practiceswhatever you may think of themto the dangers of GM foods is a mistake in logical reasoning. It is akin to saying landscape paintings are potentially evil because the painter was a serial killer. The conclusion does not follow from the premise. And giving some product or process the attributes of its user is the logical fallacy that currently leads typically pro-science liberals like Maher astray on questions of nuclear power, vaccination, and especially GMOs.

We have the World Food Prize events going here in Iowa this week. The anti GMO, anti Monsanto kooks are out in force.
I have read information from scientists pro and con, including some interesting studies that didn’t exactly give some of the GMO stuff a clean no worries outcome.
But I don’t wish to discuss the pro and cons of GMO. I do want to point out the dangers involved with how the idea of ownership has been interpreted.
If you buy a sack of seeds and only use half of them, should you be able to sell the unused seeds? Apparently not according to Monsanto’s definition of ownership-you would be guilty of patent infringement.
There should be lots of discussion over this sort of stuff.
This ever classy, waste of otherwise valuable protoplasm and pathetic excuse for a life form is seen here whacked out on a large quantity of booze and/or exotic chemicals in his Halloween, 2007 STEVE IRWIN get-up!
