Wild Animal Road Crashes Cost €500 Million
The Local ^ | 16 Oct 2013

The number of road accidents caused by wild animals has risen sharply, according to the German Hunting Association. Motorists face a particular threat from wild boars.

In the 2012-13 hunting season there were 210,000 road accidents in the country involving wild animals, an increase of seven percent on the year before, hunting association DJV said.

Twenty people were killed and 3,000 were injured in the accidents. The damage as a result of the accidents is estimated at €500m.

The number of accidents involving wild boars has risen most significantly. In the last year, 22,000 wild boars were reportedly killed in road accidents. It is unclear whether this is down to an increase the population of wild boars or in the animals’ increasing fearlessness of traffic.

And 180,000 deer were also killed in road accidents, an increase of five percent. The DJV said: “A deer dies on Germany’s roads every two-and-a-half minutes.”

To reduce the number of animal deaths in future the DJV has teamed up with national motoring organization ADAC and the Institute of Wildlife Biology in Göttingen on a research project.

They have tested fences containing scents to keep animals off the road and blue reflectors in 25 areas of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The number of road accidents with animals fell by 80 percent.

Germany has also invested millions in protecting animals and motorists by building animal-only bridges over busy roads.

How much have they invested in training the animals to use those bridges?

Obviously they need Joe Biden to offer some brilliant advice for the situation.
What would Mr. “Aneurism surgery scrambled my brain” suggest?
Hmm..
“Outlaw wild animals!”
“Outlaw hunting and cars!”
“Blow a whistle to scare off the animals!”
“Build a heeeeee-yoooooge fence by the roads!”

My ‘96 jetta made oil pump noise that deer fled in a panic from.
It was high pitched, bare bleeding edge of human hearing.
Deer would hear this thing coming and panic.
I always had a laugh about that.
My current car does not have that noise.
I’ve had deer mob my car and snuffle it as I was trying to exit my driveway.
It is disconcerting to sit in your car and have deer see you but not give a crap, they were busy sniffing your car...

Somewhat like having to leave your gun in your vehicle when you go to say Church.

Of little use in truck BUT you ‘feel safer’ cause it is nearby.

I have hit (or been hit) only a few times, NEVER any major damage to me...I usually drive a pickup, SUV or Van (full size FORD)and normally have them on but if you don’t have them you can say ‘If I had them I wouldn’t have hit the deer’ or if you so and you hit a deer ‘I guess they don’t work’.

Like burning a suspected witch at the stake. If she lives you say “I told you she was a witch” so you kill her, if she dies at the stake “Well, I guess she wasn’t a witch afterall”....

Either way, once one is selected chances are pretty high they are a `gonna be daid(sic)`.....

Security blanket?
Dunno.
Check out my post 9.
That experience was after my turn signal relay burned out.
My car smelled of crisped electronics.
The deer loved it.

That was pretty much the feel of it!
Darn things made small squeeks, excited snuffles, and whistles.
I’ve never heard deer do that before.

They can make a funny *snort* when they are checking you out.....just B4 their flag goes up and they take off.

Just a kid, I was sitting in the VT woods w/ dad [scouting B4 deer hunting season opened], early morn, and was *supposed* to be watching for deer, on what we thought was a deer run....I fell asleep, sitting w/ my back against a tree....and the doe was sniffing my boot and her *snort* woke me up with a start! Gosh what a scare!

This was repeat snorts as if they couldn’t get enough of the smell of my turn signal relay.
They did that for a couple days until the smell died down.
Don’t know why, but they sure mobbed the crap out of my car.
I thought they’d be terrified of that smell.
I was!

It was a sickening crisped electronics smell.
When the relay fried I thought my car was on fire.
It was later that day when the deer mobbed my car.
The smell was present out about sixty foot from the car.
And watching the deer stumble over each other to snuffle my car while I was in it was creepy.

Well.
Jackpot for me this morning on my way home.
Not only did I just smack an unknown bird in the dark, feathers and blood on my windshield, but the same herd of deer that swarmed my car were waiting for me by my driveway
Who in the great cosmos did I tick off?!
